How much damage to tires if installed in wrong direction?

Dealer installed OEM 214 20" staggered setup on my X5d. Dunlop sportmaxx directional tires. When filling up with diesel, noticed the front tires had the arrows pointing forward and the rear tires the arrows were pointing backwards. Only drove about 100miles that way so hopefully no damage to the tires

Were the arrows that were pointing forward at the top and the arrows pointing backwards at the bottom?

Should be okay with 100 miles. You'll have less traction and more friction.

The heat from the friction could cause issues, long term had you driven thousands and thousands of miles. But the tires are fine.

What a dumb move. Never had that happen, but it won't hurt them.

(1) 100 miles won't hurt it at all,

(2) "Forward" and "Backward" depends on whether the tire is resting with the arrow is at the top or bottom of the tire.

No, these were clearly installed left/right backwards. When the arrow was at the top the front tires, it pointed forward (in the direction of rotation as the car moves forward) The back tires had the arrow pointing to the back of the car - the complete opposite of the fronts.

The new dealer I took it to confirmed they were wrong and just swapped the left for the right on the back and all is good. They couldnt come up with any good reason other than just a simple goof.

Oh well, if no damage done, I'm not going to make a fuss.

You should inform the service manager at the first dealership. You notice the mistake and caught it in time but the next person may not be so observant.

I drove about 700 miles on my Pirelli directional tires, before noticing that they were incorrectly mounted. But in my case it was a tire shop, not the dealer.
