Mark044 is on a distinguished road
My 2008 X5 30sd was doing the sudden no power change to neutral then stall completely. Wait a minute restart runs fine for a week then same again always when power applied to drive away or speed up into motorway traffic. Car showed no code other than boost pressure. After much checking of transmission and vacuum hoses it was nailed down to a failing high pressure fuel pump. New pump and all fuel rail sensors the car is back to perfect running, no more issues. Lousy Aussie high sulphur poor quality diesel damages the pumps quicker than elsewhere in the world. Now only use premium diesel. The pumps are expensive with no alternative to same part number, very specific to model for correct pressure.
