I have the same seats as you and I had to go through a few combinations of settings to get them right but now they are very comfortable.

FWIW I ended up using this system which worked for me but YMMV.

To start with adjust the seat base to its lowest position both front and rear, set minimum lumber and side bolsters.

1. Raise seat base until your eyes are level with a point two thirds up the wind screen.

2. Move seat base forward until you can fully press the accelerator with your leg still slightly bent.

3. Lift the front of the seat base until it supports your upper leg.

4. Extend the seat base front forward untill it is the length of a clentched fist away from the back of your knee.

5. Check and adjust point 2.

6. Adjust main seat back position about 5 degrees back from upright.

7. Adjust upper seat back until it just touches your shoulders.

8. Adjust headrest height untill the center of the pad is level with your ears.

9. Adjust steering wheel height until comfortable

10. Adjust steering wheel length untill your arms are straight when you are grasping the wheel at its top with your fingers curled round it and sitting with you back firmly against the seat back.

11. Drive for 20 minutes and then adjust lumber support to fill any void between your back and the seat.

12. Adjust side bolsters for comfort.

This results in quite an upright position but is extremely comfortable on long runs. Well it is for me anyway but we are all different!

Boosh,

I am sorry that you are not happy with your seats. I just completed two three plus hour drives in my X5 35D with sport seats this week. My wife and I are both very happy with the seats. The seats are very supportive and I feel great after a long drive even though my back is in bad shape.

This is the exact reason I ended up buying the X (comfort seats).
I test drove a RR Sport but couldn't get past the "uncomfortable to me" head rest. It was the first thing I noticed when I got in and I could not get comfy no matter how I adjusted the seat/head rest. I took it off the list immediately!
My husband and the sales guy thought I was crazy and said the head rest felt fine to them.
I hope you get it sorted out.

Just to be clear Boosh, the OP, has comfort seats not sports seats already. (see post 12)

Its the comfort (multi contour) seats he is finding uncomfortable.

OK, so it is the not so "comfort" to him seats he is having a problem with... I guess I have the regular not so "sport" to me seats in mine.

The RR dealer told me the headrests in the sport were anti-whiplash, but I would rather take my chances then have my head thrust forward and down every time i sat in my car. I couldn't believe there wasn't a way to adjust the headrest more but there wasn't.
I'll have to try out the BMW comfort seats, see what I think.
Maybe the op and I share some funky neck anatomy, I can understand his pain.

I had a land rover D3 HSE prior to the e70 X5 and the seats in that seemed comfortable when you first sat in them but after a run you got out in pain.
