Members report on Safety Defect in 2010 X5 35d

Just to keep everyone up to date on the dangers lurking in the diesel, to some of our bretheren and their wives, I post this:

Note this is a PUBLIC COMPLAINT from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and is just repeated here so members can be fully informed:

MY BRAND NEW 2010 BMW X5 35D HAS STALLED MULTIPLE TIMES, IN MAJOR INTERSECTIONS COMPLETELY OUT OF THE BLUE. THE VEHICLE FLASHES "ENGINE MALFUNCTION" AND "REDUCED POWER." THERE IS NO WAY TO CURE THIS ISSUE, AND IT ONLY SELF-CORRECTS AFTER A MATTER OF MANY MINUTES. WHEN THROTTLE IS APPLIED, DURING SUCH AN INCIDENT, THE VEHICLE BUCKS WILDLY, BETWEEN STALLING AND STARTING. THERE ARE MANY OTHER BMW X5 OWNERS HAVING THIS ISSUE. NO FAULT CODES ARE REGISTERING ON THE COMPUTER AND THE VEHICLE SELF-CORRECTS AFTER STARTING AND STOPPING THE ENGINE MULTIPLE TIMES VIA THE PUSH-BOTTOM STOP BUTTON. ONCE THIS TOOK 3-HOURS TO RECTIFY, WHILE I WAS STUCK ON THE SIDE OF A BUSY HIGHWAY. THIS HAS ALSO HAPPENED AT TIMES IN WHICH I'M MAKING LEFT-HAND TURNS IN BUSY INTERSECTIONS, NARROWLY AVOIDING A HIGH-SPEED IMPACT. MY VEHICLE HAS ONLY 4,000 MILES ON IT. MY DEALER HAS BEEN UNRECEPTIVE TO THE ISSUE. I CONTACTED BMW NORTH AMERICA'S CUSTOMER SERVICE TWICE AND THEY TOOK A REPORT BUT NEVER CONTACTED ME BACK. I'VE LEFT MESSAGES WITH THE CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT BMW NORTH AMERICA AND STILL NO RESOLVE. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. I HAVE NO IDEA AS TO WHEN THE VEHICLE WILL STALL OR MALFUNCTION. I FEEL I CAN HANDLE AN EMERGENCY, OR AT LEAST LESSEN A POTENTIAL IMPACT IN A WORST CASE SCENARIO, BUT I DO NOT FEEL THE SAME ABOUT MY WIFE. THE CAR LOOSES ALL BRAKE AND STEERING PRESSURE, AND I FEEL VERY UNSAFE DRIVING MY FAMILY IN THIS VEHICLE. MULTIPLE OTHER OWNERS HAVE SOLD THEIR VEHICLES AS A RESULT, BUT THOSE VEHICLES ARE GOING TO END UP IN THE HANDS OF OWNERS WHO WILL EXPERIENCE THE SAME ISSUES. IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE SOMEONE EXPERIENCES THIS ISSUE, IN AN INTERSECTION, AND IS KILLED BY ONCOMING TRAFFIC. PLEASE ASSIST US IN OBTAINING RELIEF TO THIS KNOWN ISSUE. YOU CAN VISIT THIS FORUM, WHICH IS ONE OF DOZENS, THAT COMPLAINS ABOUT THE ISSUE IN QUESTION. HTTP://WWW.XOUTPOST.COM/BMW-SAV-FORU...SAME-TIME.HTML

That silly laughing cartoon really dampens the whole thing... yes why laugh if what you portray in here is worth worrying???, Most of us yes we have previous models but that does not mean I cant feel for my bros and sisters with X5 2010 in here when they have such a dilema... do yaself a favor and delete that damn laughing icon for people to take it with seriousness it really deserves!

Pretty shameful ARD, especially in light of Member Montoya's post last night. Will it be funny to you when someone is killed or seriously injured as a result? http://www.Xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...-new-x35d.html

What is the ODI number with NHTSA (or a link to the complaint on their website)? I was just looking for it and cannot find it.

It is the only report on a 2010 BMW X5 diesel

ODI - Office of Defects Investigation

Enter the appropriate data, e.g., BMW X5 model year 2010

I am laughing at whoever made that report to NHTSA... that person- we actually don't know who it is- is clearly a blowhard, taken to verbal hyperbole and exaggeration.

The report is filled with falsehoods- not that he had, or has a problem- but the assertions that this is a massive issue, with dozens of other reports, blah, blah.

That is why I am laughing.

There appears to be an issue with a few cars- I suspect fuel pressure control problems- which need to be dealt with.

Montoya's post is interesting but not resolved....

Finally, unlike some members here, I will not go back and edit history. That is a wienie thing to do, and then the posts following my original will be out of context. I am no laughing at the issue, just the person who filed this report.

Thanks, I was there and couldn't see my way past the ODI number bit - got it figured out though!

My post is referenced at the bottom of the complaint.

IMO The lesson here is that if you expect to be taken seriously when you post a complaint to ODI etc. you need to...

Keep it Simple - drama may be entertaining but not very helpful when a reviewer is trying to decide whether your problem needs attention.

Be Factual - what has actually happened to YOUR vehicle and how many times.

Be Specific - words and phrases like 'dozens', 'multiple', 'several' are nowhere near a useful as actual documented numbers - e.g. 6 individuals, in 3 threads on 2 forums with URLs to each thread*.

Funf Dreisig

* I made these numbers up as an example of what might be documented to support your claim that this is not an issue with only your vehicle.
