New to board...just saying hi, with a mpg question.

Hi everyone, I took deliver of my 2010 X35d in Dec. So far I have a little over 2500 miles. Had twice smelled something plastic burning under the car, tried look for plastic bag of some sort but found none. Also, it doesn't have as high mpg as I would have expected...even though I tried to drive like grandpa with a very light foot. I still avg at about 19.5mpg with at least 50/50 hwy and city driving. Could my 20"s be the reason I won't get anything over 22mpg on a combined avg?

Other than that, I love my 35d! I love the torque, I love the NAV with the cameras and the annoying beeps from the PDC (saved me a few times)..and I love the HDD with the usb plug =)

I have about 1k miles, also split 50/50 and am averaging about 24 mpg. You are either driving like a nut or there is something to the 20"s. Do we have weights on the stock setup v. 20's?

yeah I seriously pay attention to how much my foot step down on the pedal...and I watch my mpg needle all the time. I've never once got anything close to 24mpg.
I mean in city driving, yeah I can see how my 20's (if heavier than stock) would affect my mpg at every stop and go traffic....but even on freeway I avg about 22mpg going 65-70mph (done by resetting my mpg on the OBC while car is cruising on the freeway). I am confused...

I have around 700 miles on my 2010 with stock 18s and have been averaging over 25 mpgs with a 70/30 split. First tank was 26.9 based on the gallons to fill it and actual miles. Haven't refilled the second tank but it is showing over 25 mpg.

FWIW here is the mpg (US) graphs for our 2009 35 delivered in Aug. '09. One is by mileage the other by date. These graphs are based on a fuel log where we write down every gallon we put in the 35d and at what mileage. We attempt to fill the tank each time. The diamonds are mpg since the last fill up. The curve is mpg since the very first fill up.

So what mpg should I say we were getting so we can compare mpg? The mpg/tankful on summer or winter diesel? The long term average of every gallon and every mile? The mpg number I see most often on the dash display?

MPG on the dash. I reset my trip odo and the mpg every time after I filled up. I usually fill up a little less than 21 gallon at the pump and the distance I traveled is usually between 400-420miles. At the same time, the OBC reads 19.6mpg most of the time. So the actual gallon pumped in vs the actual miles traveled matches with the OBC mpg number.

Again, I don't drive aggressively just because I have been trying to get a good mpg number....but haven't gotten one so far.

To add to Funf's data, here's how we've been doing, with a car (truck) generally half full of sports equipment, and standard RFTs and rims. The better tankfulls are Interstate driving, albeit above the posted limits. Not sure about winter/summer blends these data - some of it from a road trip to Kansas and Louisiana December/January and therefore winter blend? Something's not kosher with the OP mileage issues and self claimed throttle behavior!

The closest comparison would be the diamonds on my graphs. These are mpg = (miles driven / gallons to fill the tank).

As you can see we got better mpg in the late summer & fall running summer diesel than when it got colder and running winter diesel, even though we were still in the break in period where the mpg was getting better with each tankful last fall.

All of your miles have probably been running winter diesel during the break in period. So maybe 19-20mpg per tankful is OK. FWIW I wouldn't be too concerned unless your mpg did not improve quite a bit this spring.

p.s. the very low mpg/tankful diamonds include significant towing (distance and/or heavy loads e.g. 2 tons). These tankfuls are also included in the mpglong curve. But none of the winter tankfuls include significant towing.

That's a neat piece of software, what is it?
