Should I buy this CPO Car with only 45k miles?
See link 2007 BMW X5 3.0si - BMW dealer in San Diego California The asking price was 32995 and they finally came down to 31850 plus tax, lic, registration. I think this is a fair price considering the car has Sport, Prem, Nav, 3rd Row, Bluetooth, Rear Climate Pack and the low miles. My issue is the service history seems a bit sketchy. Here it is: # Mileage Defect Code/Description 31774 01 89879 17885 01/10/2012 01/11/2012 0 45,158 99999977UW HANDLING CHARGE UCPP $50.00 PER REPAIR VISIT 31774 01 89870 17885 01/10/2012 01/11/2012 0 45,158 17110048UW RADIATOR-LEAKING 32410548UW HOSE FROM PUMP TO STEERING BOX LEAKING 31774 01 85119 17025 11/22/2011 11/23/2011 0 44,841 99999977UW HANDLING CHARGE UCPP $50.00 PER REPAIR VISIT 31774 01 85110 17025 11/22/2011 11/23/2011 0 44,841 24005148UW LEAK AT GEARBOX CONNECTOR, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION LEAKING 32410148UW POW STR PUMP-LEAK 31774 01 60920 12342 04/11/2011 04/12/2011 12 42,810 4113000100 Bulkhead (incl. carrier) cracked / broken / torn off 6121001200 Vehicle battery permanent failure 22007 01 149120 41420 09/24/2010 10/01/2010 0 42,747 10320105MP STATE & LOCAL TAXES - FULL MAINTENANCE PROGRAM 11720376MP ENG AIR FILTER-DIRTY-MP 85990091MP OIL SERVICE(MP)AFTER THE 1ST 85990501MP STANDARD OPERATION MP 04923 01 112270 566213 06/25/2010 07/02/2010 23 39,652 1214151200 Component, DME control unit permanent failure 04923 01 93500 562893 04/02/2010 04/08/2010 14 35,734 1811014800 Front exhaust pipes (Y-pipe) leaking 04923 01 84440 561472 02/26/2010 03/04/2010 5 34,401 1832011500 Catalytic converter permanent malfunction 04923 01 53850 556654 11/02/2009 11/03/2009 1 28,913 6130247800 Switch/button, multifunction steering wheel (MFL) poor surface finish 04923 01 57710 556534 10/31/2009 11/10/2009 2 28,909 10320105MP STATE & LOCAL TAXES - FULL MAINTENANCE PROGRAM 34110077MP FT BRAKE PADS - MAINTENANCE PLAN 3421193900 Rear brake pad wear sensor unpleasant noises 5116094100 Glovebox, front passenger's side poorly adapted/fitted 85990101MP VEHICLE CHECK 85990501MP STANDARD OPERATION MP 04923 01 28670 551849 07/15/2009 07/17/2009 0 24,113 34000077MP BRAKE FLUID CHANGE- FULL MAINTENANCE PROGRAM 64310237MP MICROFILTER REPLACEMENT 85990091MP OIL SERVICE(MP)AFTER THE 1ST 85990501MP STANDARD OPERATION MP 04923 01 990350 545346 02/23/2009 03/03/2009 4 18,505 34210077MP RR BRAKE PADS - MAINTENANCE PLAN 6121001200 Vehicle battery permanent failure 85990501MP STANDARD OPERATION MP 04923 01 968650 541925 12/09/2008 12/16/2008 0 15,908 34117777MP FRONT BRAKE PADS & ROTORS - MAINTENANCE PLAN 61610077MP FT WIPER RUBBER INSERT-MP 85990501MP STANDARD OPERATION MP 04923 01 945010 537769 09/12/2008 09/13/2008 5 12,110 5145003900 Complete dashboard panelling (including carriers) unpleasant noises 85990089MP 1ST ENG OIL SERVICE-FULL MAINTENANCE 85990501MP STANDARD OPERATION MP Are these issues a deal breaker? Sorry if I seem naive. Im coming from a 05 E60 with a lot of issues that were fixed under CPO.
With this X5, Im not sure if these are a sign of things to come or perhaps resolved. Since I have no experience with E70's I was hoping to find out if these are common or if this car is a lemon. |

This SAV has had lots of issues as you have stated. Personally i would not purchase this SAV. BTW I apologize If my previous post made you feel bad.

No worries! I need honest opinions since I plan on having an X5 for sometime after buying a CPO car.

Considerable repairs for the miles, but maybe some E70s have more than their share of glitches to fix. The brake wear/R&R seems excessive: fronts in 16k miles, and again 13k miles later.
Maybe just appeasing the orig owner noticing brake 'noise' or...Even in stop and go, that seems like the owner was a brake pedal rider and/or crappy driver. And, a list of other stuff, they 'fixed'...and, oil at 49k miles, but when were previous changes? With all the X5s out there in For Sale Land, I would keep looking. 2007 was the first year for E70, and it was not born perfect, in typical first MY fashion. GL, mD

I suspect this car was a disaster for the owner, with some very serious issues. The DME replacement and the Cat replacement make me very concerned...couple of weeks chasing that issue...then the possibility that this car will have the 'transmission shifting problem' that is 'normal' for some of the 2007s and people just live with for years- BMW say it is normal so there is no fix under the CPO.
Battery failure at 18k? Can you say 'battery drain' defect? Was it ever fixed??? Or did the owner just give up and buy a trickle charger? Bunch of leaks at 45k miles...did they fix it? You are not trusting the dealer to tell you abut the car, right? Or do you believe them when they say "don't worry, it has a cpo to cover anything"...so you can leave it with them for weeks on end and chase the same issues until you, like the old owner, gives up and sells it? Could be OK, but given JUST this report, I'd pass. |

Thanks for the info and dose of reality.
I've been wanting a BMW so bad after I sold my E60 to purchase a new home 2 years ago. I know there will be some deals on CPO 2008's and a lot of 09's coming of lease. I guess this was too good to be true with all the options and mileage. |
