ipod adapter cable, Can't answer the phone

I have just bought the ipod adapter cable (Y cable) for my 2008 X5 4.8. I have it plugged into both the usb and aux ports and the music works great through the idrive system. The problem is when my phone rings and I answer the call I can not hear the other person nor can they hear me. Have I got a setting wrong or is the phone useless when plugged into the adapter?

the adapter does not work for the phone onmine either, it is for the Ipod portion of the iphone only, unless you have the smartphone intergration cradle as well..phone needs to use bluetooth towork.

My phone is paired with the bluetooth and does ring with the addapted, stops the music and answers the phone but I can not hear the otherside and they can not hear me.
