I had seen the Kensington LiquidAUX. But the remote on the steering wheel was a big turn off. The Kensington K39204US has more of what we want, for less $. But if we decide to go on a road trip before Kensington releases the K39204US, we'll probably get the LiquidAux and toss the dorky steering wheel remote in the glove compartment ![]() Funf Dreisig p.s. I think Kensington missed a key market for the LiquidAUX. They could have embedded the remote in a retro steering wheel suicide knob and sold it though J C Whitney

Update on the USB/iPod cable for the iPhone 3Gs.
In the OP I said that ... "Our 35d with the $400 USB/iPod option, came with the Y adapter cable part# 61-12-0-440-796 that does NOT charge our iPhone. But bigX5er has posted that the Y cable part number 61-12-0-440-812 DOES charge an iPhone 3Gs "Today my wife dropped by our BMW Dealer and our absolutely wonderful CA swapped out or 61-12-0-440-796 cable for one with part number 61-12-0-440-812. And a minor miracle happened 61-12-0-440-812 DOES charge my wife's iPhone 3Gs, even though the iPhone still complains that the "accessory" is not designed to work with the iPhone 3Gs and offers to put the iPhone in Airplane mode. Pressing No lets everything work OK.But there's more to this story... Interestingly, if you search for 61-12-0-440-796 on getBMWparts.com you will be redirected to 61-12-0-440-812 and told that 61-12-0-440-796 has been superseded by 61-12-0-440-812. And if you search realOEM.com for 61-12-0-440-796, you will get nothing. But if you search for 61-12-0-440-812 you'll find that this is the Apple iPod cable used in a whole slew of BMWs. None the less, when our tireless CA checked a bunch of BMWs that the dealer had recently received from the factory, every one of them had the OLD cable (61-12-0-440-796) The only 61-12-0-440-812 cable he could find was in the parts department. SO...Anyone taking delivery of a new X5 with the USB/iPod option should double check the part number on the cable BEFORE you sign any papers. Your CA might not be as good/willing as our was, to work things out 7 months later when you finally get a new iPhone 3Gs. Funf Dreisig Edit: One other thing.... While testing the iPod vs Apps sound out functionality, I discovered that the sound from apps (e.g. IheartRadio, NPR, etc) IS played via the BMW sound system very briefly when a new app first starts playing sound. But the BMW sound system quickly switches back to the iPod sound. Last edited by FunfDreisig; 03-22-2010 at 10:09 PM. |

OK. Now I'm really confused*
![]() Somehow BMW, Apple or moi have managed to screw things up even more than usual ![]() When I plugged the iPhone into the BMW adapter cable today.... 1 - our X5 would charge the iPhone ![]() 2 - but the sound system complained that it couldn't find any compatible media and refused to play any of the music ![]() 3 - and the sound from EVERY iPhone app played via the X5's sound system, including the music in the iPod app ![]() Has anyone else had this happen? Frankly I prefer it working this way but... I'd like to know how/why it happened. ![]() Background: the X5 & iPhone are my wife's. She only uses the BMW adapter cable to charge her iPhone. And we rarely listen to music when we are together in car. On longer trips the iPhone is usually attached via the USB port and the longer Apple cable to keep it charged while my wife uses it in her lap for navigation, checking the weather, etc.. IOW we have almost zip experience with using the BMW iPod adapter cable to actually play music. Funf Dreisig * yes, even more confused than usual

I don't have an answer for you (sorry), as I like to see my iPhone.
I have it sitting in a mounted holder between the two middle vents. I use the cig lighter adapter just under this to charge. To listen to music, I use a 3mm adapter. What the BMW needs is Bluetooth audio! |

As I posted on another forum...
"In a few more years, the whole idea of using the iDrive to control the iPod app on an iPhone will seem as quaint as 8 tracks.... "Clearly BMW developed their 'Smart Phone integration' while smart phones were still in diapers "Of course we'll integrate 'smart phones' by tucking them away, out of sight, and reducing their functionality to a Bluetooth phone and an iPod. How could a mere phone possibly compete with BMW's highly sophisticated technology like NAV, BMW Assist, etc.. It's not like a dinky smart phone will have NAV apps with world wide aerial photography and street view or concierge apps or internet radio aops, or.... " After 9 months with our 2009 35d, the best thing we did was not order the 'technology package' with it's already out-of-date NAV. And the worst thing was to pay BMW $400 to move the USB port from the glove box to the center console. ![]() Funf Dreisig Last edited by FunfDreisig; 05-11-2010 at 11:06 PM. |

In the continuing saga of X5 vs iPhone....
Today when I plugged the iPhone into the $400 USB/iPod Y adapter cable to recharge a dead battery our X5 recognized the iPhone and allowed me to control the iPod app via the iDrive -- Dang it! ![]() Just when I was beginning to enjoy the broken iPhone integration, where our X5 refused to recognize the "media" on our our iPhone BUT allowed other iPhone apps (e.g. internet radio) to play via the X5's sound system, it goes and works like it was described in the sales literature. ![]() I'm still not sure what causes this functionality flip. But after a little fiddling around I was able to get the X5 to ignore the iPod part of the iPhone and play music from an internet radio app via the x5's sound system again. Now all I need to do is figure out how to reliably keep it broken. ![]() Funf Dreisig p.s. what I did to get the X5's sound system to play the sound from iPhone apps (and NOT the iPod app) was to select the sound source without using the iDrive. But YMMV Last edited by FunfDreisig; 05-19-2010 at 11:43 PM. |

The following should work for you.
Connect iphone to BMW using y-cable In I-drive select USB and make sure iPod music begins to play as normal Now, hold down the iphone power button until you see the "slide to power off" screen. Release power button Now press and hold the home button for several seconds. The main iPhone home screen will show and iPod music will stop playing. You will now be free to launch any app and play audio through the BMW audio system. Note, if you change audio sources in idrive and return to USB the iPod will return playing. If you select next or previous track on the center console or steering wheel control the iPod will return playing. If the iPhone is also connected to the BMW audio system via Bluetooth, and the iPhone receives a call, when the call ends, the iPod will return playing.
