Don't have my bills here, but off the top of my head, here's what's been done, both mechanically and electrically.

Under warranty
Blower motor replaced
Front Stabilizer Swap bar replaced ($1,400 cost of part)
Fuel lock off valve? replaced
Fan motor in Pass seat for active ventilation (something like 1K - decided not to fix because WAS not under warranty period)
A/C Compressor...seems to soon, but I'll be a sport....
CCC unit - by my direction to fix a problem
iDrive screen - by my direction to fix a problem
Bluetooth module - by my direction to fix a problem
CAS Unit - by my direction to fix a problem

...(*by my direction to fix a problem) - problem has not been fixed.

Smaller issues:
Right front strut top replaced ($600 plus if memory serves me right)
Twice, vertical window pillar trim replaced
Twice, door molding replaced
Steering wheel button plastic replaced
Once, upper trim, glove blox replaced
Once, entire glove box replaced (FYI, noise still there)
Rear parcel shelf, replaced

Other things that I have had replaced:
TWO - windshields
One rear window

This does not include regular tire replacement or any additional items put into my X.

Let me stop all the nay-say'rs out there that will criticize my post as complaining. I am not, just merely explaining what constitutes serious issues from smaller ones as per the question posed. I have a BMW, I'm prepared with the costs, its just that over the past 12 months, problems and issues have arisen too frequently and a general frustration has grown with the situation. I'm sure my next car will have issues, it all depends on the environment surrounding the causes and the way in which they are corrected.
Had you posted this 18 posts earlier, (and not just the singular incident you first mentioned) I'd not have made my comment.

And just FYI: the term "ill advised" is a turn of phrase, which means "Performed, carried out, or done without the benefit of wise counsel or careful prior deliberation." [ref: answers.com]

We put roughly 95k on our 2001 X5 4.4i and the extended warranties easily paid out. I'll be stunned if our '09 35d is so trouble free that we don't get an extended warranty.

FWIW We (almost) never get extended warranties. But we make an exception for BMWs, since they've become so dependent on electronics for even the most basic functions (e.g. the parking brake). By way of example....We recently took the X5 in for it's first oil service and two 'recalls/campaigns'. The oil service and the 'recall' replacement of the air temp sensor was done in less than 24hours. But the "reprogramming" took 2 more days because there was a backup on the 'reprogramming' machine. To put this in perspective. I can do an oil service and air temp replacement as well or better than a BMW tech. But I don't have a BMW "reprogramming" machine in my garage. So even if our 35d is nearly flawless it will be a regular visitor to a dealership (or indie shop) for the rest of it's life, just to get "reprogrammed".

I received the X back a few days ago. Here's what transpired, all due to coincidence of having one repair done, then the next day having a different problem pop up. Based on what was done, and how it happened, it could have been prevented with a proper test drive the night before (when I originally felt the problem, and what they obviously did not do,) however, all the problems have been corrected.

The right front wheel hub froze up, which caused the DSC to function improperly and throw a code, which in-turn damaged the right front axle, which in-turn destroyed the right front brake rotor and sensor. They replaced all items above including performing a full brake job with new rotors, pads, sensors, output shaft, wheel hub and bearing.

WOW. The modern day version of "For want of a nail....".

A nickel's worth of grease applied to the hub bearings correctly might have made a big difference.

Thats too bad about all that, and I wish you luck with 250k. I'm sure you'll make it, but hope the costs will stay down. Do/did you use an extended warranty? I know ours paid off on our Touareg 10 fold. 4 Air Suspensions, an AC system and countless other crap they denied after 50k. Sold the car with 97k, and probably dodged a big bullet.

Assuming that was done on the house due to their negligence they rightfully so replaced everything to hopefully make it right.
