BMW UK Tech finds the ongoing rattle

All

Need some advice......was asked to take my E70 in today so as a Senior BMW Technician could pinpoint the ongoing noise that is coming from the rear of the car....

After 20 miles with him laying in the boot and moving various pieces of trim he has isolated it to the area around the rear C pillar of the vehicle and has said that it is more than likely a spot weld that has come apart........

I had already notified the dealership of my intent to reject the vehicle if this was not resolved this time, this was before the broken weld.....

What I am looking for is advice on whether I should reject the vehicle now or let them attempt to resolve the issue......

Would you be concerned if a weld had come undone ???

Thanks in advance

If they opened up the vehicle and could show me the bad weld (before and after it is corrected) and would be willing to warranty the vehicle for that weld for its lifetime, I guess I would be satisfied with the repair.

No way to say if there are other welds that are marginal...but let BMW speak for their confidence in their 'fix'...

I'd give them two options (if you can):

1. I'll turn the car in immediately. ( I assume you have this right, and will receive a pro-rated refund.)

2. If I keep it and any new noise turns up from the rear of the car, I will receive every penny back that I paid for the car.

They can chose which they'd like.... if they choose #2 it needs to be in writing.

While I am a big fan of doing searches, I doubt that the fixes mentioned in that thread would do anything for a broken weld on the unibody, as the OP stated his dealer had found.

odd. Kirkinner, you seem to enter threads and chide people for lack of searching prior to posting (this isn't the first time recently that you've done this). as JCL states, i don't think your rattle is even remotely related to the weld issue that is affecting the OP. did you read the OP or just the title?

furthermore, i did a quick search and realized that your post that you linked in your reply was originally dated 3/12/2010 but there were several similar posts found via search that predate your thread related to a rear rattle.

not trying to pick a fight, Kirkinner, but why do you feel the need to serve as the search police?

Update on status........

Gave the dealership the options and within two hours they had come back to me saying they were happy to source a new vehicle for me.....I let them have a couple which I thought were suitable replacements and I am now awaiting a phone call about them.....

Fingers crossed

That's very reasonable of the dealership. Good luck with the new vehicle.
I personally would not be at ease driving a vehicle known to have weld issues. There's no way to know if there are other weld issues somewhere else in the car.
