Short Commute and Diesel
My daily roundtrip commute is 24 highway miles, a mechanic told me short drives are not good for diesel engines. Since this person is not familiar with the new modern engines, I wanted to ask folks who would be in the know. Also, has anyone changed the oil DIY? I like to change oil in my cars mid way of scheduled service. Does anyone have photos. Where are the openings for refilling the urea tanks? Audi has it behind fuel refill door and VW puts it in the spare tire well. Thanks Marc |

Short trips are not good for any vehicle, diesel or gasoline. That distance is likely not any harder on a diesel than it would be on the gasoline version.
Oil changes seem to be called for by the vehicle at around 9000 - 11,000 miles. You can do it yourself if you like, it is very straightforward, but BMW seems to have reduced the oil change interval on this engine compared to the gasoline engine in any case. Urea is included from your dealer during the free maintenance period, but apparently only when scheduled maintenance is due. If you use it faster than average, you can just top it up yourself, it is about as complicated as windshield washer fluid.

As long as the motor gets up to operating temps, and it should in 24 miles, I wouldn't worry about it.

24 miles is not a short trip in my opinion. There is no temp gauge, but I'm sure it would be at operating temp on a 24 mile trip. First vehicle I've ever owned that didn't have a temp. gauge...

Shows how much I know about the new models. But I've owned 2 diesel trucks and a diesel motorhome, so I do have some reference (including buying diff fluid in a 5-gallon container!).Next thing you'll tell me is that there isn't a dipstick on some newer BMWs. Nah, doing something like that would be retarded. ![]() Regardless, I agree that 24 miles is not a short commute. A short commute is the one I used to have: 1.8 miles.

Thanks for the responses, this helps with my decision.
To clarify, my commute is 12 miles one way and the truck would site for 8 hours. |

There are many reasons why one wants a certain car...I can't explain the Car Jones myself.
But, what is the rationale/desire for a ~$65G diesel, that may see 150 miles a week, as a commuter car? If it is doing other weekend stuff, I understand; if not, it makes little sense to me, but everyone has their own bag. My 50Cts. GL, mD

![]() I agree that the payback is going to be a long time based on mpg, if that's what you're getting at. However, upon further review, it doesn't seem that hard to get the 3.5 up near $60k and with the $4500 eco credit plus the tax credit for the diesel, the delta is smaller than it originally appears. OP, I'd drive both and buy what fits your lifestyle best.

It doesn't mean we have to drive Prius and Smart vehicles, although having them in the mix isn't a bad thing. It does mean we should think about our choices, just for a moment or so, before carrying on. That may or may not be what MD was saying, but I'll suggest it if not. Now, if someone is going to tow a trailer on the weekends, or has a large family, then vehicle choices are somewhat dictated. But do we all need an X5 for short distance single person commutes? If so, great, carry on. But one can't help but wonder how long we are all going to be doing this for, and what we will look back and think about it 30 years from now. Vehicles like the diesel X5 are getting lots of attention right now. But they are reported by the US federal government to consume more barrels of oil at the wellhead (due to diesel fuel production issues) than their gasoline counterparts. They are artificially cheap right now, as the federal government is giving out subsidies (go team!) and BMW is adding 'eco' incentives to encourage consumption. I understand that the federal government is in the business of giving out money now, so that one makes sense. BMW is in the business of creating demand, so I get that. The only stakeholder group that will change our direction here is the consumer. /end rant I agree with admranger that the OP should drive several vehicles and buy the one that fits his lifestyle best. I would just modify it slightly and suggest that we should all buy what best supports the lifestyle we would like to have in the medium term, and not just our short term (current) one.
