2007 4.8 X5 Lunging Problems

Since our 4.8 X5 was new, we had the problem where you gently push down on the accelerator and car lunges or accelerates too quickly. We've had it into the dealer numerous time with no results. They've put at least two new firmware or software updates in but we still have the problem. I seemed to have read threads about it on this forum before but my searches have come up empty this time.

Has anyone figured out how to get this problem fixed? Maybe I'm using the wrong words or description when we take it in to the dealer.

I feel like this is a safety issue. If it lunged forward when the car in front puts on the brakes it would be a certain accident. Would something like this be a candidate for the "Lemon Law" (if it even still exists)?

I'm at my wits end. Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated!

Same issue here with a 07 4.8. I bought mine a few weeks ago and have had the transmission software upgraded twice. Both times the problem would go away for a few days and then come back. I've now keep the transmission in DS mode when starting and then shift it over back to "normal" once the car is moving. Not a great solution but better then embarassing myself with passengers who probably think I can't drive.

Software update (SIB 24 06 08) fixed this problem for me last year.

You should be able to search on that SIB for more info.

E70, X5 4.8i with N62TU and 6HP26TU - Various Driveability Complaints

MODEL
E70, X5 4.8iA produced up to 10/08

SITUATION

The customer may complain about one or a combination of the following situations, listed below:
  1. Jolts and jerks when pulling away during a 1-2 upshift.
  2. 3-4 shift jolts when switching from acceleration to deceleration during or shortly before the shift.
  3. Harsh 2-1 downshift (jolt) when coming to a stop with light brake application.
  4. Jolts and/or jerks felt when reaccelerating after coasting.
  5. Judder when gently accelerating (most noticeable at an engine speed below 2,000 RPM).
CAUSE
DME and EGS software calibration

SOLUTION

On a customer complaint basis only, check the vehicle's integration level.If the integration level is E070-08-05-525 or lower, then reprogram/recode the complete vehicle with a current Progman version (target integration level is E070-08-09-520, available since the release of Progman V31.1).

WARRANTY INFORMATION

Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty or the Certified Pre-Owned Program.

This would never happen though unless you're driving in manual mode, correct? The automatic/DS mode doesn't start out or stop in 1st gear.

Thanks to all for this information. I'm going to print out this thread and bring it to my service advisor. I sure hope that it fixes our problem! I'm a little concerned that this will not be the answer to our prayers, however. I have not noticed situations 2-5. Situation 1 surely could describe our problem (Jolts and jerks when pulling away during a 1-2 upshift.). Actually, now that I typed this I'm not sure that this is our problem. I don't think that my problem is in shifting from 1 to 2 but simply controlling the throttle at the start in 1st. A light touch on the accelerator intermittently yields a "jack rabbit" start.

I now suspect that the dealer may have been trying to resolve the problem with this course of action when our problem may be unrelated.

Anyway, thanks for this information.

That's weird, especially since it does it doesn't start in 1st in D...it starts off in 2nd. The only way to get it to kick down to 1st in D is to stomp on the throttle. Maybe that's your problem, that the throttle is overly sensitive and is kicking down to 1st too easily.

Could be! I'm now thinking throttle position sensor or something like that. Now I really think that the dealer has been chasing down the wrong problem.
