Who has aftermarket 20"s and have seen MPG dropped?

Have my 20"s put on the very first day I took deliver. Never really driven the car with stock wheels but I have always avg at 19ish mpg with normal driving with city/hwy at 50/50 (I swear I watch my MPG gauge all the time). When I am driving local, I sometimes get down to 17mpg. I am really starting to think that my bigger and heavier 20's are killing my MPG. Not sure if anyone out there has had this experience?

I could have swapped my stock wheels and test for a tank but I will have to have the tire shop transfer the TPMS, which is a lot of hassle and I am too lazy for that. Hope someone had seen and can confirm similar MPG drop going from stock 18's to some cheap ass aftermarket 20's

I also believe they cause lower MPG. I have reps on a 3.0si and I am only getting 15mpg, barely, with 75% city driving. I should see 17ish - I'm not all that heavy on the gas. Of course I can't really compare (or complain) since I got these only about 500mi. into ownership and was actually getting break-in [low] gas mileage to begin with. I don't drive that much so it's not a big deal to me but I just wanted to confirm that I'm getting lower than expected mpg with them.

Separate question - I know there are many [many] 30i & 35d owners out there - give us an idea of what you're getting with stock 18/19s.

It is pretty well documented (on most sports car forums) that adding unsprung (rotating) weight will decrease performance and increase fuel consumption. The 20s are pretty heavy with the 275/315 setup. General rule of thumb is that you can multiply the unsprung weight by a factor of 4 to give you an idea of sprung weight effect. For instance if you add 10 lbs to each wheel, the comparative sprung weight increase would be 160 lbs.

This is why people make such a big deal of lightweight forged wheels (Neez, RAC, BBS etc).

There is also more aerodynamic drag and rolling friction due to the wider tires.

Yeah. Lost close to 1 mpg when I went from 20's to 21's. Larger wheels just increase fuel consumption.

ok with all your confirmations, I feel much better. I rather lose a few mpg if I have to just to keep my 20's, I just had to make sure it wasn't just my car thats doing it.

This may not be an option for the X but when I bought the winter setup on my 545, If my memory serves me correct the weight difference between the Micheline's and the Blizzak's were 3-4 lbs per tire. The performance review were pretty close but so I figured the weight savings per tire would be better than .1 higher rating
