I was told specifically that there are three versions of the TPM sensor for the 2010/2011 model. The latest one came out with X5s built on or after October 10th, 2010. I have my dealership researching it. My car entered production on October 13th. So I will let you all know the specifics on Monday.

Here is the email I received from Gary at TR:

We are indeed aware of this issue.
We have found that the customer will need to check their vehicle's build date found on the VIN placard which is located on their driver's side door jamb (the lower B-pillar).
For 2011 X5's built during 8/10 or 9/10, the older sensor is required.
For 2011 X5's built during 10/10, we will need to run their VIN number.
For 2011 X5's built during 11/10 and later, the newer sensor is required.
When ordering online there will be a section towards the end of the order for customer comments. Please enter your build date into that blank such as "gary - build date 8/10". If the build date is 10/10, also supply the VIN #.

Sounds like it corresponds with the October mini-refresh.

BMW dealership called me to confirm what Tirerack said. X5s October 10th onwards have new sensors. They quoted me over $600 for four new sensors!

Glad we have some dates to work with finally! BTW - Tischer is $66 each for the sensors and another 12 or 15 for the valve stem - so a little less than $400! New part number is supposed to be 36106790054 if you want to look it up on their site.

The guys that told me I needed the new sensor seemed to be mistaken, Tischer looked them up by VIN and shipped them to me - part number is 36236781847 (the older part number) and they work fine with my September build, so looks like it is the magic October cutoff date when they changed, not with the model year.

Hope this helps out.

Rob

OK so I feel a little more at ease. I was gonna have a single wheel mounted and run it on the truck to test it. But I think it's all sorted out now.

For future reference.

My build date is 9/10
I'm using BERU RDE008 Sensors.

Thanks to all that helped. I'll also report back with my own results.

Does anyone know if the TPMS will work on a 2007. I am buying tires and style 209 rims from a new 2011 x5 to put on my 2007 X5.

You have the same issue in reverse. It depends on when the 2011 that you are getting the wheels from was built. If it was before September, you should be OK.

After going through this with my M3 (which changed in 2010), I was pleasantly surprised last year when my 239's (summer) worked with my 2010.
