X5 snow performance
I realize they come in AWD, but I'm more concerned with the traction in 4+ inches of snow. I visit family quite a bit in Wisconsin and want to make sure it will track well there when I need it. Anyone had any bad experiences with these in snowy weather, baring using the wrong tires? |

With the proper tires (SNOWS) nothing can stop the X5 in the snow, period.

Ive had my E70 for 18 months or so. What I can tell you is "buy snow tires." The standard all seasons just suck in teh snow and ice. The ABS is alsways going, hard to take off, etc. I live in SOuth Bend and they put no salt down and maybe some sand at an intersection, and thats a MAYBE. I bouth Blizzaks and have never looked back. I got caught this year with some bad lake effect snow and no snow tires and once i put teh Blizzaks on, I was unstaoppable. Great vehicel with the right tools.

With snow tires they are amazing winter vehicles.
We are expecting 12-24" of snow plus drifts starting tonight and I am very much looking forward to it ![]()

I've thought as much with the tires. I grew up in Wisconsin so I've seen my share of deep heavy snow. Now, I've seen some nice models with these sporty racing type tires on them and thought to myself. Self..."Those would suck in the snow!" I even thought about just getting a second set of rims and snow tires just for winter time.

A separate set is the easiest way to go, and it saves the nicer wheels from the corrosion and harsh elements.
I bought Blizzak LM-60s from Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels - they have a lot of other options as well.

I agree with all of the previous responses. Snow tires make the X5 a VERY capable snow vehicle. It is a rather advanced AWD system and you will feel the vehicle working constantly to keep you out of trouble. With the DSP on you will have trouble getting out of shape at all.
Just remember that ABS and good tires still can't overcome physics. When it comes to stopping a heavy vehicle on slippery surfaces... Give yourself tons of room. |
