ABC says recall on 2008 low-pressure fuel pumps
Maybe this is what happened to me last year which was the 2nd such episode: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...ul-vendor.html What are we to make of this announcement? |

Presumably that BMW has figured out (or believes it has figured out) a cause for the fuel pump failures that have been going on for four years. They are recalling 130,000 vehicles, but expect that only 40,000 of them will require a new fuel pump. There must be some logic to which ones are getting a new pump.
I got a new fuel pump when mine failed two years ago. I wonder if this means another one. Some owners have had four pumps replaced.

Consumer Reports Cars Blog: Recall: Various BMW vehicles equipped with twin-turbo-charged engines, 2008 BMW X5
"In a separate action, BMW is also recalling about 20,800 2008 X5 SUVs to replace the low-pressure fuel pump. If the fuel pump fails the engine will stop and the driver will not have power assist for the steering and brakes. The vehicle will go into "limp home" mode, which allows drivers to operate both steering and brakes and safely pull off the road." I've got a '08 3.0. To which '08 X5s does this recall apply? |

Further search shows that http://abcnews.go.com/images/TheLaw/...FP_Recall.docx
"In a separate action, BMW has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that it will voluntarily recall approximately 20,800 MY 2008 X5 Sports Activity Vehicles equipped with normally-aspirated inline six-cylinder engines to replace the low-pressure fuel pump. In this case, should the fuel pump experience a failure, the engine will stop running and the driver will lose power assist for the steering and brakes although both the steering and the brakes remain operational." Curious to see if this will become a world wide recall in the near future. |

engine stopping completely is a major safety issue... I will have to see if I can wait it out till late December though so I don't have to go back yet again for my annual maintenance/inspection. I've gone this long without it happening right?

I have been in this forum since I purchased my 3.0 X5 in 2008, No one has ever experienced/reported any fuel pump issues in the 3.0 X5 AFAIK. WTF how can they be recalling the most reliable engine in the BMW line up. There must be a mistake in this one.

I don't think it's an engine issue. I think it's a problem with fuel delivery to the engine by the fuel pump that's causing the problem.

I just called bmw north america. They asked if I was experiencing an issue and I said no. Their response was to wait for a letter, if I get one. The rep confirmed it was all '08 X5 regardless of model (3.0 or 4.8) since they are v6. However, they are rolling this out slowly. Letters go out next month with service beginning in December. If you have an issue, they are willing to service you now.
Good luck on getting an appointment when everyone gets their letter. |
