I am not professing to be a purist here, but IMO you are proposing to rectify what you see as incomplete badging, as opposed to adding fake badges. Do whatever makes you happy!

Back in the late '80s, I was involved in the manufacturing of feller-bunchers for coastal logging, essentially highly modified tracked excavators that cut and stacked trees. They had a lot of specialized forestry equipment such as house guards, fire suppression systems, more hydraulic circuits, and saw heads. We used a turbocharged diesel engine, similar to all the other excavator models. However, somebody got the idea of putting a turbodiesel badge on it to set it off. There was no other chrome on the entire machine, it was all yellow and black, very industrial and purposeful. But on the side engine cover, there was a single chrome badge from a mid eighties Mercedes 300d. It was very popular. We had to run up and buy them from the Mercedes dealer every time another machine was completed. The owners weren't even the ones operating the machines, but they liked the badges. Lesson was, whatever makes the customer happy is all good.

If you want to spell out the word diesel, the letters are available individually. The purists might get a little excited about that, though

Why not. It's a forum. People post random things relating to vehicles. Is there some sort of approval process for threads that you need to inform us about ?

I de-badged my 550, but not sure I'll do my X5. I think de-badging is fine, but putting on fake emblems (other than "D") is crazy. But then again, do what you want with you're car. : )

Nope.

It just seems that periodically these "fake badging" thread get started and, as I said, "I don't really see the point of people posting and being bothered by it either."

Is there some sort of approval process for replies that I must go through before posting that "I don't really see the point of people posting and being bothered by it either?"

That's just my opinion on the topic, no more, no less.

I took the "K75S" badge off of my motorcycle and replaced with a "Frigidaire" badge when I bought a new fridge for the Kitchen. If people ask, I remind them that GM owned Frigidaire until 1979 and there was a sharing of technology back then.

I'm not bothered by it. To each their own. I just find it humorous that people go to the trouble of putting fake badges on obviously non-M vehicles in order to make people think they have an M car. (Spare parts with happenstance logos notwithstanding.....)

Two problems with this.

1. Most people don't have any idea what an "M" is in the first place.
2. Those that do know probably also know your fake ride isn't a real one.

Quite true.

It's not like they put a "Turbo" or "Hemi" emblem on, which a large number of non-gearheads would recognize. Maybe they just like the colorful look of the M emblem.

I myself take most of the emblems off of my cars, as I think emblems detract from the look.
