Won't Shift into Drive or Reverse.
I have a 2007 X5 4.8 w iDrive. My wife drove the car from home to the child care place, about 15 miles. No issues with startup or driving the car at all. She went inside for 5 minutes to take my daughter inside and when she got back in the car it started just like normal but would not shift into any gear. No warning/dummy lights, everything worked but would not shift. Today the dealer tells me I need a new battery. has anyone else had this issue before? I have had the dead battery multiple times and have never had a gear selector issue. Just looking for a little reassurance that the battery could cause this problem. also dealer told me they wouldn't cover the battery under warranty because I don't drive the car enough. crazy.....

I've had this happen twice in 3 years of ownership ('08 3.0) but each time, turning it off and back on resolved it. I didn't bother mentioning it to the dealer cause I'm sure they can't duplicate it since it's rare/random.
As for battery issues, I've had that twice as well but not at the same times. Electronic gremlins?
