Running Boards (Scratches/Removal)

First post as an E70 owner- traded my E53 2004 for a 2008.

I have running boards on the vehicle- what I am wondering is
- Is there a way to touch up scratches on these? I have just a few- they are pretty minor, but I'm wondering if there's a solution?
- If I just completely remove the boards altogether, would there be some kind of visable discoloration or similar kind of thing on the vehicle where they used to be?

Enjoying the vehicle so far, getting used to Idrive....

TTM
