X5 Diesel Cold Start - Has This Happened to You?

Has anyone else had this happen when doing a cold start? It looks like it was probably below 0 over night, it was outside, and then 5 degrees when he tried to start it. He had the glow plug delay, but when it started it sounded horrible and shook the entire car like crazy.

Mine has never taken more than 1 second of delay after hitting the start button to heat the glow plugs before starting even in -1F in Indiana. I've also never seen my Tach bounce like that no matter how cold it was when I started the car. That being said, the diesels are noisier when first started in cold weather and sound more like a truck engine than a passenger car. That noise decreases significantly when the engine coolant/oil/block is up to operating temperature.

Yeah I'm fully expecting additional noise and the glow plugs a couple times. But the amount of shaking and rough idle he has is a bit scary. 90% of the time mine would be in the garage. But there will be about twice a month in the winter months where it'll be outside at my parents or the inlaws when my wife and I are visiting them. In MN winters that means well below 0. I'd really hate to walk out and start my $65k BMW and have it shake that much.

I work with these car almost everyday. For a diesel, this is normal unless your check engin is on.

My question is that rough idle and shaking in the winter, the norm?

It seemed normal to me. The camera was shaking more than the 35d was. It wasn't noisy inside the cabin. It will be fine when it warms up a bit.

the problem is with your "summer" fuel. it start to freeze in around 5 degrees of Celsius (18 F) and can't pass through the fuel filter, therefore your odo is shaking. please check the fuel filter and add some diesel anti-gel before refueling.
