Vinyl tape on chrome trim...Good or bad?

I have a 4.8 with no sport kit...so the trim around my windows is chrome. I looked into replacing it with the black trim that comes with the sport kit but it's north of $1500 plus install!

After a little research it seems a lot of folks go with black vinyl tape that simply sticks on the existing trim.

Anyone here done this and can share their experience.....difficulty in installing...how close to the sport trim does it look...durability....which tape they went with?
