Almost gasoline in a new diesel X5!!
So I am sitting at the car wash today, getting the Range Rover all shiny, when I see 2 BMW porters pull up in a beautiful new metallic black 535i and a Sparkling Bronze X5 35d (both with window stickers and paper plates...brand new). The car wash also has a 76 station. The guy (both wearing their blue BMW dealer shirts) gets out of the 535i and begans to gas up. The other worker in the 35d just sits in the car. Then he gets out, opens the gas tank and starts to put the nozzle in the car.
My Spanish is not the best anymore, but between the screaming NO, NO, NO, Diesel, Diesel, Diesel from the guy fueling the 535i...I picked out "f---ing idiot and moron". I won't mention the dealership...but I know the owner/manager of the dealer would have gone ape sh*t!! Stupid is as stupid does. I guess the fuel gauge that says Diesel only and the like 40 Diesel warnings all over the fuel cap wasn'e enough information for this dumb guy!! |

the one vehicle saving feature....
...assuming the nozzle is the correct, smaller diameter, then the inlet valve will not open since the switches will not be activated. Equals a mess, with gas spilling out the nozzle initially, but pretty much zero gas should get into the tank itself. Protects against those Darwin award winners employed by some dealers from the sounds of things. The BMW employee who took us through our PCD (props to Donny Isley, he was awesome!) explained that feature. Along with a specific case where someone got fcuked over when they accidentally selected the gasoline pump instead of the diesel one, and also had the misforture of having a larger diameter diesel nozzle mistakenly installed on said gasoline pump. So, as a result, the nozzle activated both switches and voila, was able to fill up the tank. D'oh!

Exactly.
And even if it did, it is hardly a disaster. When VW diesels (Jettas and Golfs) first came out, they regularly got filled with gasoline (one every month or so where I worked). People just weren't used to diesel pumps, and there were no special nozzles then. Each time, we put it up on the hoist, drained out the gasoline, refilled it with diesel, and sent it on its way. I don't remember seeing engine damage in those cases, even when they drove off the station lot and got a block or two down the road.

The cases I recall, they just stalled.

I know. But the other BMW porter totally freaked out, when he saw the other guy try! He prob thinks the nozzles are the same.
Gas in a diesel engine is not as bad as Diesel in a gas engine...that is BAD!!!! |

Gas in a diesel engine can result in a "runaway" engine can't it? or is there something in the engine that prevents it?
