Will New iDrive controller knob fit old iDrive?

So after spending a few days with the new iDrive hardware in the 5 loaner. I really like the feel of the new smaller controller.

Does anyone know if I can simply pop my current iDrive knob (only) out and put in the new smaller iDrive knob? Kind of like the ACS knob replacement. (Just went on their site and saw the newer ACS knob for the new iDrive too. Very nice).

Additional new iDrive opinion:
As far as the additional buttons go, it's really not as big of a deal as I originally thought. They are nice, but not something that will make me feel envious.

I was thinking the same thing as I popped out my old one for cleaning. Has anyone tried this. (knob only)
