Towing with surge brakes - anyone tow a boat?

So I picked up a new boat, its approximately 4400 lbs and the trailer is about 1500 lbs. The trailer is a tandem wheel setup but it only comes with surge brakes. Am I being paranoid about towing that much weight with only surge brakes, or should I convert to electric?

With electric, I have to remember to disconnect the trailer harness before dunking it, and I'm worried about corrosion of the parts.

Anyone tow a big boat? What are you experiences?

I've towed 6000lbs of boat/trailer with surge brakes without issue.

As far as dipping the trailer in water - the electric controller for the brakes is usually on the tongue so I don't think you'd have any reason to disconnect it.

Pic for reference:

I'll be towing a 24' bowrider similar to that one. How easy was the reversing down the boat ramp with the surge brakes?

You won't feel the brakes engage when backing slowly. The first couple of inches backing you may hear some noise from the trailer but nothing major.

Stick with the surge brakes, especially if your going into salt water. The water if rough on the parts inside the brakes and salt water, forget it. Good luck.

As long as you reverse slowly, the brakes won't engage.

Especially backing down the ramp - I just put the X in neutral and let the weight of the boat/trailer pull itself into the water.

We have fresh water lakes in Idaho (at least where I go) and so I converted to a electric brake setup and used the Tekonsha prodigy controller. Seems smoother to me and more even braking. I do disconnect the power to the trailer when I launch the boat; it's just automatic for me to do so now. Cost me about $500 at the time to convert to electric brakes but that was 10 years ago.

Can't say enough about the Tekonsha Prodigy controller line... the accelerometer senses what the vehicle is doing and proportionally applies the brakes. I tow a 13,000 lb gooseneck with an F250 and that thing handles like a (big) dream.

Nice! this is good intel, I gotta 24' Scarab SCS I'll be towing when I return with my X. Probably the single reason I actually got the V8..
PS, Nom, your boat looks great, I've got the thru-hull exhaust and the external steering as well, I'm sure yours sounds mean and handles like a champ as well!
