Long Trip for the X5

I just got back from a nice long trip with the X5, Charlotte,NC to Wildwood, NJ and back. My niece and nephew-in-law wanted to go there this year. I took the scenic route across the Chesapeake bay Bridge Tunnel to DE, and the Cape May-Lewes Ferry across to NJ. Round trip was 1066 miles, turning over 10k and almost to 11k miles on the X5. MPG was 19.7, not bad considering all the traffic lights on the trip and 2 days running around Wildwood. Most of the trip was spent crusing 5-10 over the limit.

The comfort seats were great. Considering the seat time and late night driving, I wasn't tired at all. A collection of great road songs playing on the iPod helped too.

My only complaint was the Nav system. You can't do a true multi-segement trip, and if it doesn't like a route (such at VA route 58 to Norfolk), it's almost impossible to route thru it. The Nav insisted I take I-85, I-95, and I-64, 100+ miles out of my way to avoid it. Not even alternate routes showed it.

US 58, like most of Virginia's divided highways, is slightly less interesting yesterday's bucket of wallpaper paste. It's made worse by the speed enforcement.

When it comes to sat nav systems in general, just ignore them and drive the way you want. Yesterday I drove from Durham NC to Spotsylvania VA deliberately avoiding all interstates. I just plotted out a route in my head using a map. Took about the same time as the interstate.

The dealer tinted the front windows to the NC limit. They mentioned at an inspection that they are close to not passing. But I like the look.

I know the deal with the Nav. I took a long trip last summer with one of my then new X5's (took my MSport).

The Nav gave me all kinds of weird routing even though it's a straight shot up interstate 15 from San Diego to Montana.

The work around was to use the "map" feature and zoom in on the interstate along the way, mark a "way point" and add it the trip.

Pain in the ass. Meanwhile my 99.00 4 year old Garmin 330 worked flawlessly.
