Yes, you can open them with the shades closed.

Can someone be kind enough to take a few detailed pics of how the passenger side window shades are mounted? I recall other models have a slit within the door frame where the shade is pulled out from, is that the case for the X5?

I just ordered mine a couple days ago, I can post pics one I get them and install them.

Just ordered this and installed. Love it. Though, I think $300 is a bit much for shades.

Just got mine today, but havent installed yet.
There are clips that double stick to window, then the shades clip into the clips.
