Playing Windows Phone 7 audio files

I tried connecting my Windows Phone 7 phone to the audio jack in the center armrest on my '07 X5 4.8. I selected "rear/external" on the i-drive and the audio quality playback was terrible. I was also unable to scroll through the playlist using anything other than the phone itself.

I thought there was supposed to be a better integration for external audio.

Any thoughts?
