Spare tire?

I just purchased a used 2011 X5 35d sport suspension with 21" wheels. I am removing the 21" rims and replacing with 20" rims so it won't cost 3K to replace the tires every 8k. Run flat tires are way more expensive and get only have the number of miles as regular tires. I think I will take my chances with the non-run flat tires, but is there a solution to the problem of a flat tire other than RFT's or getting towed for a flat?

Thanks for your help!

PS Anyone wanna buy some black 21" rims with 7100 miles in perfect condition?

There is actually a factory spare wheel available Emergency wheel for the E70 35d. It is a 5X18 ET14 rim, then you'll need to source a tire (tirerack or other popular sources have tires available). I have that OEM emergency wheel available HERE.

A good plug kit, couple needle nose/locking pliers, and a mini compressor tucked in the back, is good mental health; like packing rain gear, that one may never use. And, with a cell phone and some 'towing/flatbed' coverage, dunno what else one would need.

RFTs may get one home, or pointed toward a tire joint, but unless you roll into the dlr/tire joint and they happen to have these jumbo tires, in stock and in your size, it is still a day or two for relief.

Add in a drive to the outer lands, and one isn't going to find replacements, even wobbling 50+ miles on a RFT...

Great for 'piece of mind' for a whiny spouse, etc., but ask yourself when was the last time you had a flat on the road?!

We did 13,000 miles this past summer in our VetteVert with non-RFTs, and never gave it a 2nd thought, but everyone has their own bag and comfort zone.

I like were Davids head is, sometimes a small get you home kit is super handy. I have the M mobility kit (found HERE) in all my cars. It has a little compressor, can of BMW puncture sealant, gloves, and it all fits in a nice little case.

I made my own mobility kit.

2 Cans of Slime brand SUV/X-Large Tire goop
1 Cigarette Lighter compact compressor
1 Needle Nose Plier
1 Tire Plug kit
2 Pairs of rubber gloves
1 LED Flashlight

I bought everything off of Amazon except the gloves and flashlight. It was much cheaper than the BMW kit and other kits available.

Just FYI- (AFAIK)

There is only one suspension on the diesel, and that is 'regular'...you have AD as an option.

But the "sport" package does not change your suspension.

And yes, buy the spare...

Thanks again everyone.

Loving my loaded Black Saphire Metallic 2011 X5 35d! Bye bye C300 sport. This is one "minivan" I can stomach, and stomach well.

To get the spare from BMW, there are several part numbers needed to complete the package. This is to include the replacement bin for the storage area (doesn't work if a 3rd row), the wheel, the tire, the jack, and a lug wrench. There are several threads detailing those parts but a good parts department would know too. It was about $350 total.
