We have had 3 Range Rovers and probably 15 new Mercedes models, and NOT ONE SINGLE time has the PDC gone off in bumper to bumper traffic!!
In our 2008 Toyota Sienna van it works like Range Rover setup. it has never come on ever in bumper to bumper driving. I miss it on E70.

How do you know it's working then?

It's pretty simple to push the PDC button when pulling into your garage or parking spot, in fact it becomes automatic.

Does it beep at you every time you pull up behind another car at a traffic light or stop sign? I like the idea of it being automatic, but wouldn't want it beeping at me in traffic all the time.

Nope. Mine never beeped ONCE in 3 years of ownership

If it never beeped in bumper to bumper traffic, then what is the point of wanting it on when you are at slow speed? Is it just so that when you nose into a parking spot, you can tell the distance of the car in front of you?

I DO NOT know how it knows...but it does. Our 3 Range Rovers and every Mercedes-Benz we've had/have with PDC/Parktronic NEVER goes off in bumper to bumper traffic.

Remembering to have to push the PDC button everytime you want to use it, does not become 2nd nature. It is illogical and not designed right!!

EX: I'm pulling into my underground parking garage and need to pull into my space with a pole on 1 side. Instead of having to switch on the PDC and I'm not shifting into reverse it automatically comes on and guides me. Far better then BMW's design

I am not sure why folks are resistive to the idea that BMW does not have this right. It is what it is. However, folks who know how it should work, understand the need for such feature and for some reason, BMW does not.

In 5+ years for using this feature on various other manufacturers, the PDC alert only comes on while parking and not during bumper to bumper traffic. Not sure if there is some sort of artificial intelligence built to sense stationary objects/predictive sensing, but it works and has helped us while parking.

The idea is that it comes on without first turing it on, etc. It is always on, unless you turn it off.

I still prefer and love driving my X5 over the mini van!

I think it's just tied to vehicle's speed. PDC (=parktronic) in my LR did come off occasionally bumper to bumper traffic, but it wasn't annoyingly often.
