Crap! Warning rookie mistake inside

So I was just backing into my garage on a beautiful 12 degree winter night when I noticed my neighbor using my drive way like some kind of rally car turn around point ( backing out of his driveway and into mine sliding around...I was guilty of it earlier at the mall!)...then crack I backed up an inch too far and smashed my beautiful taillight into a wooden railing!

The lens is shattered but the leds and everything else appears fully in tact. Do I need a full assembly or can I get a lens? What is it going to cost me? I am trying to decide if I should use my insurance or not...sometimes I find I pay more in the long run for reporting stuff like this. Sorry for the lack of pics but its not pretty anyways. Thanks in advance for any and all advice !

PS: after further inspection it appears I have done some damage to the rear hatch under the passenger side taillight. Looks like this has geico written all over it. What a pain in the butt! Literally

I wonder how much the 12* had to do with it? Maybe if it was 70* it might have not been so brittle and survived?

You will need the whole assembly, it is actually cheaper than I though it would be.

Tischer has it for $178

Yeah that and a camera....the whole back end of my x was caked with powder. It was one of those nights where cars were in the ditches left and right....but the x handles extremely well!

The systems were useless and so was my attention span apparently.

Sorry to hear that. If it helps (and it probably won't) I did something equally, um, absentminded. My daughter visits us on some weekends with her nearly new VW, of which she is crazy proud.

So one Sunday we all got into the family car (an Infiniti) and I backed it out... got distracted by something on the street and the two cars' bumpers met at about 5 mph. My dtr was in the car with us and I've never seen her so sad, but am proud of her that she didn't say a word.

The Infiniti's bumper was caved (it partially popped out later) but scratches remain. It's an older car so I'm not sweating it. But her car sustained scratches that, thankfully, we were able to buff out with about two hours of elbow grease and various chemicals. Only if you know where to look you can see a few light scratches now. She forgave me

Things like this happen. Shake it off and be grateful it was just a tail light. $200 mistake. Not that big of a deal overall...

Anyone know the part number for the 2012 passenger side tail light assembly?
