Sunroof wind noise when closed

I did a search and didn't see anything relevant.

The issue is with the pano sunroof with the sunscreen retracted, glass closed and driving at highway speeds. I'm getting a lot of wind whistle/noise. Enough that when I listen to a podcast while driving I generally have to close the sunscreen. When I close the sunscreen it mutes it but its annoying because I love the pano roof letting in light.

I did have the whole sunroof cassette replaced under warranty at the stealer about a year ago. Does anyone know if the seals go bad or is it more likely a seating issue? The glass panels don't line up exactly perfect when closed but there are no water leaks that I can find.

Can just the seal be replaced? What say the forum bros?

Might be the glass parking settings. There should be no raised leading edges, otherwise it can and will create wind noise even if there is not an air leak.

So you need to carefully inspect the leading edges of the glass when the sunroof is closed and you can also put sudsy water around the edges of the glass with the HVAC fan on high and the doors closed to look for air leaks.

the edge where the two glass panels meet is a hair off. Do you think doing the Initialization process over will correct that or does it need mechanical adjustment?

Do not know if the initialization procedure will help, but is is probably easier and quicker than manually adjusting the glass panels, so this is where you may want to start.

But also check for "air leaks" with sudsy water and the HVAC fan on high. If there is a larger air leak you will have bubbles. If you have small bubbles, make a note and move on for now as this may not be your problem.

The other option is to buy this - http://www.amazon.com/Lisle-52500-Me...ic+stethoscope

Take the transducer off the end of the hose and you can use the hose, and extend the hose if needed, to "sniff" around for a specific area of noise. Do this while someone else is driving so you can focus on the perimeter and glass seals. This stethoscope is a very good tool for air leaks, engine vacuum leaks and other noises within the engine or other rotating assemblies.

Isnt the wind noise / whistle already confirmation of a leak though?

No, you could have wind noise that is external turbulence that can be heard in the cabin though the glass/sheet metal and/or you could actually have an air leak that is causing both turbulence and air leaking (ingress/egress) noise.

Might sound similar, but 2 very different causes.

Even if you do not have an "air leak" the stethoscope can help narrow down the area where the noise is loudest.

its a seating issue. i fixed mine with the same symptom. there are two screws, cant quite recall their location, but will try to find the communication i had on this. you loosen them, push the roof up ever so slightly, tighten. and the wind noise is gone

I had a similar issue with my '13 X5. The dealer made it sound like they were doing me a favour by replacing the seal claiming that the loud wind noise is normal. of course when they replaced the seal the sound went away.
