Time to check alignment (especially rear toe settings), rear suspension, and tire pressures.

Alignment was done about 9k miles ago just after the new tires were mounted. I'll check the pressures again, but the tires have worn fairly evenly (slightly more on outside). Much more even compared to the last set prior to allignment. Despite being so worn thr ride is quite still but maybe its because they are on the rear and the fronts are still in good shape, at most 50% worn if that. My best guess is that those 4 trips up the mountain driving pretty spirited just ate them up. I guess pushing a 2.5 ton SUV up hill quickly just was more than they could handle. All 4 trips came after I had rotated the tires. Oh well, it was fun though, just going to cost me a couple hundred bucks.

I drive in the mountains all the time on summer tires in my not-quite-svelte X3 and don't see any unusual wear issues, so certainly the alignment and/or tire pressure inflation pressures are suspect. Then again the Bridgestones aren't known for their driver satisfaction

+1 with JCL & AzNMPower...I haul azz 3-7 times a week up and down our very rough, windy, steep mtn road and my old Michey Diamaris with 20+k miles still look very good. Not my fave tire, but they are holding up well; they are non-RFTs on a E53 sport.
I wouldn't blame an occasional mtn road run and I would have alignment, etc checked more thoroughly. GL, mD

Do you think alignment is binary? either 'aligned' or 'not aligned'?? red or green? As Ive posted incessantly, the BMW specs allow a wide range of values. You can get a BMW alignment that gets you 10k miles or a BMW alignment that gets you 30k. Post the alignment page, we can tell you whats wrong. Anything else we are wasting time with guesswork |
