15K miles and front tires bald on outer side?
http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...-warranty.html I understand that it's an issue with alignment but it seems very odd that a number of people are having this issue, all with front tires and all in the outer front.... I don't mind changing the tires and getting an alignment but I'm afraid there may be an underlying issue with the front suspension. When I shared this info with my friend he indicated that when they did they alignment on his, he had asked for a before and after and the numbers were barely off so the tech was not sure what was happening. Anyone else having this issue? |

I had the same issue. Took the dunny's out of the bags they were in over the winter and they were shot (front tires both bald on outside edge and rear tires were down to the tread bar). They probably only saw 30k kms of service. I was starting to wonder if the guys who set me up with a set of winter wheels and tires switched them out on me while I wasn't looking. In Canada replacing the dunny's closes in on $800 a tire (including all our wonderful taxes) - I went with Toyos and put a small compressor and a can of black sealent in the trunk

Same here, the outer edges on both front Dunlop RF are wearing out more than the rest of the car, especially the front left. It pretty much got close to becoming bald, so I bought a used one and that too is wearing out now.
But the two rears are looking like new. WTF?

I had my 20" Dunny's checked last weekend--even wear, have 17K miles on them and he said I have 50% left still.

1. BMW warranty on the alignment is 2000 miles. Unless you take your new car and throw it on a rack, this warranty is useless.
2. BMW alignment specs allow WAY too much toe. If you only ask them "please check it" and they say "It's fine"...you may still have a grossly inadequate alignment. You want toe on all 4 wheels at 0.01-0.03MAX 3. That wheel and tire package WILL show plenty of wear- you have a heavy, powerful chassis plowing the crap out of the smaller front tire. Camber and toe need to be considered. 4. A $99 alignment at a non-BMW dealer- where they know WTF they are doing and will listen to you is cheap insurance when you change tires.... A |

I did have the alignment done when i put on the Toyos - to that toe specs as I recall seeing it noted in a previous post on this or the other site. The tech said that all 4 were within a hair of .03. Interestingly, when the snows came off the wear pattern was absolutely even and minimal wear after probably 10k kms. The snows are also 20" but 275 width on all four corners.

I have ~16,000 miles on my 20s, the wear is down to 5.5/32 on front set and 7/32 on rear set. I did alignment once (it wasnt much off), and the wear is pretty much even.
I do feel worse handling lately (more "loose" side to side), as they are wearing down. Will try next the Bridgestones, they have slightly better wear indicator. Wear rate depends on your driving habits, road surfaces and air temperature. I've heard that down in south states they wear out much faster than in the North, as high temperatures keep rubber much softer and easier to "peel off"

Front tires outter edges destroyed on 2 sets - driver's side is noticeably worse.
I have a 2011 x5m that I got 6 months ago with 2 sets of wheels - 19 inch 255 Continental RF winters on 298M and 20 inch staggerred 275/315 Bridgestone summers on 299M. Winters front outter edges shown bad wear, but they were already rathsr used. But the Summers were very good all around and when I did the swap from winters 2 weeks ago to drive to Florida from Toronto (~5k kms both ways) they looked amazing. On the way back I noticed that outter edges on fronts, especially on the driver's side are disappearing fast. So in 2 wks and 5k kms my fronts are rather gone. The plan is to visit the alignment shop again and then probably buy the same type tires and do the alignment again. When I bought it, the lower control arms and front springs were changed so alignment was done then and redone 2k kms after at Midas after i touched the curb.

I can give you a 'great alignment', and you get 40k miles- or a 'crappy alignment' and you get 8k miles...BOTH WILL BE WITHIN THE BMW RANGE! The point is just 'getting it aligned' is not adequate So go grab that piece of paper from the last alignment and post it! |

Ard, I went back to Midas today to ask for numbers and certainly they dont store those. I should have asked at the time of service but never knew about it thinking alignment is either on or off. Now I know).
Need new tires so my choice is 2 new fronts of the same kind as before or all 4 new if I have to. If the latter, i may opt for non-RFs as I hated how loud Bridgeatones were - like bearings in all 4 corners were gone! Continental Sports (non RFs)? Money is not unimportant to me so looking for very good quiet summers at reasonable price - just got AAA membership and have booster/compressor with me at all times so this may enable goinv with non-RFs.
