Largest width tire on stock 18 x 8.5 rims?

Does anyone know what is the largest width tire that I can put on my STOCK 18 x 8.5 inch rims without rubbing against any suspension components?

The stock tire is 255/55-18. I am thinking of going 285/50 or maybe even 305/45. But I am worried about rubbing.

Anyone done this before? Thanks in advance...

255 is the optimal width for an 8.5 rim. You can probably get away with 265 but definitely not 285.

FWIW, I have Pirelli winter 210 size 285/40/17 mounted on 17x8.5 wheels.

285/50-18 is perfectly fine on on an 18x8.5 rim. I DON'T KNOW ABOUT RUBBING.

(Nothing over a 285 will work on an 8.5" rim, from a quick survey on tirerack.)

The tire OD is also within a few tenths of stock diameter. 29.2 versus 29.3" on the 255/55-18

What tires are you looking at? Runflats or not?

I had some 285/60/18's on my 2001 for a few years with no problems. This would lead me to think the 285/50/18's would fit fine - HOWEVER, I just tried 265/65/18's and 265/60/18's as replacements. Both didn't fit for some reason according to the tire shop ....Hopefully someone can give you some advice to help you avoid this!
