I think it's normal. I have it too. I thought a metal cleaner would remove but it does not.
I don't find that the inside bothers me though; I would just like to clean what looks like black corrosion on the outer edge when I'm doing the "full clean". |

My guess is water, water droplets, (slightly dirty water), with the usual byproducts of engine combustion. Cars burn very cleanly these days, but it isn't purified air and water rolling out of the exhaust.
Next time I walk through your parking area I promise not to get down on my hands and knees, mini mag lite in teeth, and peer up your pipe(s). ![]() GL, mD

Ok, thanks for the responses. I thought maybe it was the tailpipes being defective (on my '01 X5 I had tailpipes that were replaced under warranty for a weird discoloration so wasn't sure).

It's just deposits from the exhaust gases.
Mine had this badly when I bought it (used). I had to use an oven cleaner to get it all off, and now I keep it clean when I wash. |

Finagle69 - what did you end up using to get the black grime off? You mentioned oven cleaner, just curious what worked for you? I have tried a number of different products and it does clean it somewhat but does not bring back the chrome….not so much concerned with inside but i am with the lip of the pipe.

After that, I used a simple metal polish from the detailing section at Walmart to restore the shine on the edge of the tips. My tips have some scratches on them naturally so its good enough. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2 |
