What do you call "the right kind of battery"? How did you go about determining that the one at Walmart was the correct one?

as long as all the ratings and specs are the same on your current and replacement battery you really don't need registration it might just die a little bit prematurely which is not a huge deal. If you get one with lower or higher specs it should be reprogrammed because the car will over or undercharge it.

I was told by more than one vendor that I need an H8 which WalMart and Batteries Plus had in stock yesterday. However, as this is my first BMW out of factory warranty I didn't know I had to worry about these other specs.

the problem is that H8's come in many different specs... "H8" is just a physical casing size for the battery core. So, any of them will fit but the power the battery supplies might not be.

you have to actually look at your current battery write down the ratings on the stickers and compare to the new sticker before you buy if you want an identical battery.

Thanks, but I fear this sort of thing will be the least of my worries now that the 2008 has only the minimal extended warranty.

Let me tell you this, since this is your first BMW. Putting in a low quality batt that doesn't match oem specs can leave you in a world of hurt when electronic modules start failing and the cars systems cannot operate properly. Batteries are a BIG DEAL on bmw's, just keep that in mind. Are there aftermarket batteries that work well of course! but you have to do your research don't just grab an H8 off the shelf and think it's gonna be a headache free process.

I have a 2008 X5 and it's still on original battery. It's 5 years old. I don't see any warnings/errors from it unless I leave door open for a long time etc.

Should I looking at doing a "preemptive" replacement based on what I'm reading here?

Once I get the appropriate cable, I plan do to do some coding later this month. I would try to get OEM battery though (or match the exact specs) --- not looking to mess around with that.

if you get increased battery discharge or high battery drain or certain functions not working properly, then change it when you get a chance. It may last you one more year but 6 years is pushing it on these cars. better off not getting stuck somewhere or locked out with your trunk stuck open in the rain if it dies when you open it etc

The battery you need is manufactured for BMW by East Penn/Deka. Look here:

Thanks. The dealer wants $495 so I will be going with a former BMW mechanic who is well established and will charge $285.
