not sure about the coding portion but your battery is located in the trunk underneath the floor panel. unhook the battery terminals and make sure they don't touch anything or each other. I usually remove the negative side first to avoid shorting out anything when loosening the positive side. unscrew the mounts that are holding the battery in place, then swap out the battery with the new one and do everything in reverse order.

Pretty sure you have to code the new battery to the car. Find an indie shop to do this for you. It has something to do with the car reading the charge / voltage on the battery and adjusting your systems to recharge the battery. If the car thinks the old battery is still there it can damage the new battery.

If it's the original battery you are replacing, you will have to use the newer type and the only ones that can program the car for this new type battery are the dealers. At least that was my experience. Expect to pay about $500.00 for this little job.

Wrong.

Many places to buy this battery.

Anyone with a BMW programmer (Autogenutiy, autologic, DIS/INPA/ect) can 'register' the battery.

Or you can skip registration, save $350 off the $500 you paid, and just replace the battery a bit sooner. At $350 savings, you can replace 3 batteries for every 'dealer sourced battery'!

I hope someone comes out with a DIY soon on how to register the battery. I have the inpa program but am not familiar with what it's capabilities are...

jlam86: I just posted this http://www.xoutpost.com/909173-post16.html.

You mention the fact that you have the INPA program. Can you elaborate? Is this the disc that comes with the INPA cable?

basora, that is correct. i have the K+DCAN USB interface, INPA compatible cable and software. But I am not too sure how to use it as some of it is in German.

I will do some research on the bmw coding forum website and I will see if I can find the info for you guys.

so i found some pretty info that might help others out. I found this youtube clip from a PREVIOUS bmw technician who is showing e70 owners how to replace the battery. If you scroll to the very bottom of the comments, registering/coding the battery is ONLY required when the cold cranking amps and your amperage on your new battery is different from the one you are taking out. This info goes pretty hand in hand with the info Basora posted up.

BMW X5 E70 X6 E71 Battery Removal How to DIY: BMTroubleU - YouTube

But all this talk has got me quite curious on how to use the INPA program should one change to a different battery. Going to see if i can find info and i will report back if i do.

Like question about 2008 4.8i

(This thread was closest to my query.)

The only place I could find the right kind of battery for my 2009 4.8 X5 this morning was WalMart. So I should not go this route because there could be an issue with coding and their battery might be deficient? I started at Sams but they didn't have H8 in stock and couldn't find the battery!

I have an appointment with the dealer Tuesday AM, but am not willing to pay $350 for coding.
