Has Anyone Blacked out Aluminum Running Boards?

Hi Everyone,

I just wondered if anyone has blacked out the aluminum running boards to Matte Black or any black for that matter? I have a platinum Grey 2012 X5 and have been trying to get rid of all chrome and metal on the car. (emblems, exhaust tips, etc...) The last item is the aluminum running boards. Does anyone have any pictures? experience? What did you do to black them out? Powder Coat? Take it off and spray it yourself with matte black paint?

And lastly, What is your opinion on making them black to blend in with the car?

I recently saw a post here where someone wrapped the Alum part in carbon fiber ... It looked awesome.
Why not try plasti dip just to see if you like the look, if so get then painted or powder coated.

i'm in a similar situation and plasti-dipped them. I liked the look, but it didn't hold up and I've been told I'll have the same problem if its just painted. Powdercoating seems to be the way to go, but I hvaen't looked into how to to seperate the aluminum portion from the plastic....

let us know if you find another option....

I've seen a ton of posts from pick up truck forums that use Rocker Panel Paint. Those guys didn't like the chrome look so they sprayed it with that and most have held up for 1-2 years so far. I'm 50/50 on the powdercoating because it can cost a lot of money, especially uninstalling the aluminum boards.

I'm going to call a few places in my area today to see if they can give me an idea of costs. Powdercoat is most likely the best and cost effective and durable option.
