Tires
Sorry for the poor quality cell phone pic. The problem is the outside of the tire tread is messed up.

Pretty hard to tell from that picture. Could be chunking, from too much heat, usually caused by under inflation.

Looks like chunking. Unless you have warranty for tires from BMW they will not cover.
If you need to replace some like the RFT's(Run Flats) because of no spare and many are now running the NON RFT's tires as the y are more comfortable in ride quality. Many like the Continental ExtemeContact DWS(Dry, Wet, Snow) tires as the price points are very attractive. Some like the Toyo STII's as well. I like Michelins Tour HP for non RFT's. I have New Duellers now but will probably move towards Conti's or Michelins non RFT's in the future. I have a repair kit from BMW just in case

Thanks for the replies. These tires are Michelin Latitude Tour HP ZP. They were put on in December 2011 and have around 22K miles on them. They've been carrying about 30 to 35 PSI, depending on the ambient temperature. Is that too low? So this shouldn't be covered by the Michelin warranty?

Are you running a staggered setup or a 18 or 19 inch wheel option?
Michelins are one if not only tire manufacturer that even offer any warranty for tire wear on staggered fitments. Some Michelins has tire chunking issues in certain batches but the best way to find out what your options are is to take it to the retail shop that you purchase them from and ask them to look. I ran a Michelin Tour HP on my older E53 X5 20" staggered setup with a 32/35psi inflation setup. They worse correctly but just wore out faster. 14K miles and rears needs new tires. The fronts are like new with 8/32nd's left. They offered me a $66.00 credit per tire for the rears. Not that much but better than nothing. The tire pressure seems to be in line with mine. I live in ATL, GA. Could be a manufacturers defect and the best way to tell is to take it to your tire place that you got them from or a Michelin authorized retailer. |

19's all the way around. My wife noticed a noise in the front after Discount Tire rotated them. This caused me to take a closer look at the tires and saw the chunking. There is also an issue with the front left tire where there is an anomoly on the inside of the tread. It's not a knot but more like a 12 to 18 inch section where the tread bulges.
Definitely a trip to Discount tire today! And likely a premature set of new tires. I hope that they give me some warranty assistance on the old defective tires.
