I have just over 15,000 miles on my 2012 X5d and I am averaging 19-20 MPG in city driving and 26-27 MPG on highway trips. My average over the entire 15,000 miles is @22.5 MPG. I do the calculation the old fashion way. Miles driven divided by gallons consumed at time of fill-up. I do not depend on the computer display. I find the computer calculation is usually 5-7% higher than my calculated MPG.

Sounds about right 18-20 in the city and 26/27ish on the highway. I have 22" wheels, K&N and a tune. I would say although tune is said to increase mileage but it actually turns the fun factor up a lot so it's hard to drive it efficiently.

Thanks guys. Awesome tips.

I reset the on board computer yesterday. Watched driving patterns and I managed 21 mpg for the same city routes. Haven't tried highway but can't wait.

I guess the previous owner made the average really low?

Definitely going to get air filter and diesel Additive though.
Also decided to get the JBD chip. Was worried that would drain fuel consumption even more, but I think now I can afford it.

Only had for a couple weeks. It does take a little longer to get going
What is "def"?

def= diesel exhaust fluid. Read your manual- is essentially a tank of urea that is used sparingly (and automatically) to reduce the Nox emissions from the diesel. Pay attention to the pitfalls- ignoring this and the vehicle warnings can leave you stranded. Again- Read the Manual.

Quit watching the mpg/lt per km readout on the OBC...it is like looking at the opening bell of the stock mtk and using that short term reading for 'how one should invest'.

Do three or four tanks full, noting miles and gallons filled and, simple arith to arrive at a thousand mile average, if you are curious. Anything else is anecdotal and probably not near what the car is really 'averaging'.

And if you do put a chip in it, realize that they usually make the OBC even less accurate in terms of mileage indication, since they work by fooling the sensors.
