Rear-end Clunk when stopping
Another thing i have ran into - a clunk that sounds like its coming from the back of the car - it happens RIGHT BEFORE you come to a stop - doesn't matter if you've been hard on the brakes, or just lightly came to a stop, it will *sometimes* make a clunk right before the car comes to a hault (less than 5mph)... i don't think its the transmission, because i've manually shifted it to first, then braked very slowly, and still heard the clunk.... You can't feel it in the pedal - can't feel it in the car at all... can't even really hear it if the radio is on, but if you have the radio off, you can hear it pretty easily... Also, it seems to do it sometimes when you go from Drive to Reverse, once you hit the gas, you will hear the clunk Does anyone have any ideas? It really doesn't sound like a bushing or anything to me, as i would expect that to happen when the weight transfer happens - not the case here... Differential fluid is good... so i'm kinda at a loss... It doesn't seem like something that is damaging, but I want to be as cautious as i can be.... |

Have the same exact Clunk noise. Went to the dealer since the car is under warranty and they told me it is the Bump Stopper. They had to order the part and I am going back to install it next week. I will let you now on the results....

Ok, picked the car up today after the Bump Stop was replaced and as I am driving away from the dealership I still can hear the Clunk noise. So I turn around and get the tech to go for a ride with me. First he said that it may be coming from the outside of the car but after driving it a little we both agreed that it was actually coming from inside of the car, trunk area. He took it back in the garage and had another tech go in the trunk as he was driving back and fourth. Finally found it. It was the little shade that slides over the trunk. Once they removed that, the noise was gone. Hope this helps someone else down the road !

If you have the spare tire option, you might check to make sure it is secured properly.

Funny story.
Of course, as seems to be the habit of BMW technicians lately, they never perform a test drive after the fix, just in case. |

I will have to try and your suggestion tomorrow as originally thought it could be a bush away but I have exact same symptoms as if there’s a football in the back. The noise always occurs just as you come to a stop regardless of which direction of travel. Its seems just too easy to be the real issue?
