Retrofit self leveling suspension

I'm learning if and how the self leveling suspensions can be retrofitted in an E70 X5.

I found this topic: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...nt-x5-e70.html and it looks like the airbags simply replace the springs, so that looks fairly easy

Anyone knows where the pneumatic module is located (maybe take a picture) and where the control module is located? I'm trying to figure out if all cars are prewired or not, which would substantially reduce the work required.

Thanks!

Some people are removing the SLS,but I also need one installed, because I do tow a lot.
I assume the rear level sensors are already installed,so we will need air compressor unit,lines,2 accumulators,2 airbags and control module.I wonder if the accumulators and lines from E39 could be used. They are same as E53,but must be cheaper.

I never updated this particular thread on this topic but I ended up abandoning this project. The bigger roadblock I run into is that cars are not prewired for it: this doesn't mean it can't be done but it would require a lot more work that I'm willing to spend on this.

You'd basically have to recreate the whole wiring: based on WDS there are some connection in the front of the car, some in the trunk, then run the wire to the pump under the car... Way too much work for me. And after is all done the unknown of the coding remains...

Thanks for sharing.I know it is a lot of headache, but there is so much difference in the handling when towing between my old '03 4.6is and the '12 3.5D that sometimes I want to abandon that sea of torque and go back to the 4.6is.I had more than 7 k lbs hooked up to the E53 in a few occasions and it performed as there was just an empty trailer on the back.
I am thinking also about some kind of helper air springs, american style, but didnt find anything that may work.

Have you considered adding a weight distribution device to your trailer?

Towing my race car is not that bad,I am now positioning it more backwards so there is not much tongue weight.I even towed a an 08 528i,which should be a bit over 6k lbs with the trailer, and it is acceptable.I dont think I will ever install a tow distribution hitch for this car.I have a feeling the handling will get even worse and/or inspire some false confidence in me.

I am going to try a WDH when I tow, BMW says no but I am going to do some testing.

Either way 600 is the max tongue load so level or not this is what we have to work with, I have been towing my racecar with trucks for years and there is a bald spot on the trailer from the tire being in the same place for so many years. I tried this setup on the SRX before I sold it and I think I would have ripped the receiver out of the sub frame before the car would take the whole weight, so like you I moved the car back and it was fine.

So after all that said, I am going to do a "partial" self leveling upgrade, I don't have time right now so it is in a holding pattern, but the RV show is at the end of the month so depending on how that goes it may move to the front of the line
