A/C unit intermittent

We have a 3.0D 2007 X5 with a/c problems

Itseems the compressor clutch switch is not engaging when required.

But when it does -we have excellent functionality

Keen to know if there is a schematic or a diagnosis I can follow to determine cause of this symptoms

Occasionally I am able to cycle the A/C switch on off which does not kick in the unit. But after doing this and stopping/restarting the car - I can get it to work

Thinking a bad connection somewhere - but to get to the compressor - I think I may need to get in from the bottom side.

Looking for some assistance before the weekend to determine fault.

NB: I took it to an A/C mob, and they stated it could not be fixed until I can get the unit to switch (probably lazy in my opinion) but unit works flawlessly when going

BTW - INPA shows no faults on A/C function

cheers
O

I think my AC is acting up again. I replaced the Condenser last summer and now I think the evaporator is on it's last legs.

mmm - INPA shows no error messages - but I was hoping someone here could shed some light on the A/C circuit

Is there a schematic download on this forum for E70 models?

Looking for a schematic - anyone there able to assist

Thermostat link, condenser, aux fan compressor, module

All fuses good - non blown
Blower has full functionality, control module console appears all good with inpa

Try to see the actual values in the engine and AC control units. This system does not work as in the old days. The AC request the compressor load from the DDE (engine computer) and DDE activates the compressor. It is not ON/OFF type, the load can vary from 5 to 95% or so. Not 100% sure for your car, but the newer ones are not a clutch type, but have a internal vane inside that moves back and forth and changes the volume the compressor is pumping. There is a lot of info around, you have to search.
Below is a link to a very interesting forum. On the 4th page there is a manual for the E70 AC.

Thanks guys.
The unit has been intermittent for the last 2 or so years.

I have now got the time to work at getting this fixed with the now warm weather in Victoria Australia (>35C).

The unit has been intermittent - on/off and no reason why - so I am keen to nut this out

ANother hot day today
Wife rings to say get this A?C fixed, cannot go another year without it operating properly

I have reverted to Rhiengold to test.
Tonight - the AUx fan runs as soon as I started the car. 27C displayed on instrument cluster and at a setting of MAX air cooling, fan runs and starts blowing cool air

I got revealed Fan Motor issue with Rhiengold - but now after reset - no errors and running well

So - is it a fan issue, relay or something else buggy???

WHat to try next?
