E70 2010+thoughts

Hello All,

Not new to BMWs, but am new to considering an X...AGAIN...

So here is the deal...looking at getting rid of my 328 xdrive for an X5 for my fiancee...what are your thoughts of her driving it every day...

Her driving habits: always drives until the fuel indicator is on empty and only drives 14 kms/day. I am thinking of getting something (4.8) 2010 or newer...thoughts on that??? I know about common problems and maintenance costs associated with all BMWs. I am just worried about it leaving her stranded...

All the pros, please chime in

The choices are X5, Q7 or Touareg...

Cheers

Does your fiancee, (or anyone), really need an E70 X for ~9 miles a day?

Why a 4.8? 3.0 is all the engine one needs. Or better still a d.

Go for it! My wife drove our '03 4.4i 6 years and the 09 35d has been with us for about 18 months and neither has left us stranded but we monitor them quite closely. If she tends to ignore the little telltale signs and you drive it rather seldom then it could be a problem.

You're in Toronto so maybe the 4.8i shouldn't have the sport package with the summer tires unless you're willing to change them out twice a year. That's all I've got to add.

The only thing that concerns me is the lack of driving that she will be doing...

That should concern you. You would need to ensure that the vehicle is getting more significant use on the weekend, some longer drives. Usage like that is hard on any vehicle, but the 4.8 will bite you harder when it fails.

I'd get her a 2011+ (LCI) X5 35i. Plenty of power, peppy around town, good mileage, 8 speed transmission etc. The standard steering is a bit heavy, so she might prefer one with Active Steering.

Do not choose a diesel, she drives too short of distances for a diesel.

The only thing that comes to mind is extended warranty.

The 4.8 engine and chassis will develop problems by time you hit 90k, and I wish I had bought it. Being able to fix the SAV myself I am good, other wise I would have been in world of pain.
