That could be something as simple as a low battery.

Yea don't see what the problem is. I get this error every time I disconnect my battery or switch maps with my Cobb
Drive it to the dealer or get a free tow.
Better now then after warranty.

OP--just so you understand, I'm not making light of this, but it may not be something you need to panic over. As Jyohay said, get it to the dealer and get it checked out, but it's likely not catestrophic.

Thanks for the responses. Not in panic mode since it's still under warranty

I'll call the dealer tomorrow and hope they can tow it and get me a loaner. It's my families primary vehicle.

You can try to turn the steering wheel lock to lock a few times and see if it will go away.

Yeah, that way when it reoccurs in 200 miles he will be out of warranty....

OP, bring it in. Make sure the precise warning is "Quoted" in the write up the SA has you sign.

Yes,I want the OP warranty to expire and to pay big $$$ to fix his problem
When the steering angle sensor goes out of sync, usually after disconnecting the battery or brief loss of power, turning the wheel lock to lock a few times re-sync the sensor.Simple and safe.

BMW roadside assistance ftw. They picked up the car within an hour and BMW Seattle is looking at it now

The SA asked me what he could do to make my life easier today. Good customer service.

Have them check your alternator as well. In my case battery went out, followed by alternator (one following another by a month)
