Dreaded P0442 code
The gas cap was replaced but the CEL is still on. The X5 runs fine but the CEL has been on a month now. We are out of warranty and the doomed feeling of my first big repair bill is coming. Has anyone had to deal with this on their own? Thank you

Get the BMWhat OBD2 code reader App available for Iphone or android and a WiFi dongle. Thats how I read mine, replaced the DMTL pump (very easy) and extinguished the code with the same app. I can't say enough good things about the app. Research reviews yourself and I bet you can't find one negative comment. The app cost $50 but well worth it.

No need for the $50 OBD2 app. Any auto parts store will let you use their scanner to get and clear the codes.

This is excellent information and I will be getting the app today. The only question is most of the dongles I have seen are Android only and not for a iPhone 5s. Has anyone used this product with an iPhone?
I did go to Autzone and he would not reset the CEL. They offered very little help and kept questioning why I di not take my car to a mechanic. Thank you all for the great response.
