So my turn came up today

I was driving around trying to think of somewhere to eat lunch and all of sudden I get an engine over heating error. Pull over and start to see a bunch of coolant vapor so I shut off the engine. I had some coolant in the car because its leaked a bit and needed to be topped off 2 times in like 18 months. When I opened the hood I could see coolant sprayed around and some on the underside of the hood. I Added the little bit of coolant back in and then started it up to drive to bmw about 3 miles away and the car said to drive slowly or whatever the message is.

Then I get dynamic drive error and can barely get the wheel to turn. And then a battery error next. I thought maybe the charge would build up on way and it would go back to normal but it didn't.

Haven't heard back from dealer. SA (who I never had before) guessed maybe a belt broke.

Waiting to hear the bad news now and then whether my warranty will cover whatever it is.

New SA didnt see the extended warranty so now they are following up to with them to see about coverage.

Long time ago, I saw some numbers on what a 'new' car would cost, built from oe parts off the shelf. It was maybe ~$20Gs for a $4G car.

I'm guessing a 'new' X5 from parts would be a Qtr of a mill++?

I know that in Canada, BMW dealers use value pricing for things like water-pumps, etc...I've seen their deals as low as $790 plus HST...in the province of Ontario...

So ext warranty covers the water pump but I have to pay for the tensioner, a pulley I think, some belts and hoses. With a random 15% discount they threw out (probably after a 15% markup) its five hundred and change.

Seems high but its there. Told them to fix it.

had a water pump replaced a couple months ago - was there not a loud cooling fan since the pump was failing? Anyway, it was replaced under 3rd party warranty with no hassle for around $950. Indy shop, not dealer pricing.

DIYed my waterpump in the spring, $150.

In the process of DIYing a rear window regulator, dealer wanted $180 for the part, found a brand new Genuine BMW regulator for $50 on ebay.

If the pump took out the belt, or the hose or the pulley/tensioner, the Insurance should cover it.

Dealerships will 'pad' insurance/warranty jobs by adding on "customer pays' components to help bring their billables back up to the 'raping levels' they like..ie that $1600 number. Did you bother to speak with the warranty company about what they are covering and why not?
