Brake wear sensor

Hello

My 2008 x5 recently displays the brake wear sensor light and the front brake in the service info says 9000km and the rear brake says 27000 km

Can I wait until I change the front brake pad to change the sensor?
In the meantime, can I rely on the squeaking sound to tell me to change the brake pad? Also, do I have to change the rotor when I change the pad?

My last question is how many km approximately can I drive when the brake wear sensor light is on?

Thanks
Henry

My answers are below in red.

Yes, you have to change the sensor if you change the pads anyways as the sensors can not be reused because they clip(fragile, flimsy clips) onto your pads

In the meantime, can I rely on the squeaking sound to tell me to change the brake pad?
Unfortunately no. As far as I know, none of the my BMW's made a squeaking sound due to pad wear. You would have to measure the pad thickness. The sensor only has a wire that completes an electrical circuit in it. The brake wear message pops up on your dash when the pad gets worn down enough to wear the sensor/break the connection wire.

Also, do I have to change the rotor when I change the pad?
I personally measure the rotor thickness to determine whether or not I should replace it. I typically replace my rotors every second pad change. The minimum rotor thickness should be imprinted on your rotor hub. If you end up just replacing your pads I recommend properly bedding them in to prevent damage.

My last question is how many km approximately can I drive when the brake wear sensor light is on?
This can't really be determined as it is based on your driving style/braking habits. You should really get it taken care of as soon as possible though, brakes are extremely important for your safety and others.
