This is not two more years of warranty (which covers defects from original assembly that don't show up in the first four years) but rather maintenance, which is to say scheduled services such as oil changes, etc. That is a lot of oil changes, and maybe a brake replacement.
I wouldn't buy any service package at time of purchase unless I knew that I would still have the vehicle after six years, that my selling dealer was the one I wanted to be doing the service work outside of the warranty period, that it was discounted from retail service prices, and if it wasn't available later. In other words, hardly ever. You should be able to purchase this type of plan any time up to expiry of the standard plan, but ask your dealer to see if your local rules are the same. Only reason to buy it now is to include it in your bank loan, but if the vehicle is paid off you should be able to cover maintenance costs whether by pay as you go, or with a plan purchased later. A separate question is whether you should buy an extended warranty, if it is available at time of purchase.

Ditto to what JCL said.
I love my 2013 X5 but I still have a hard time holding a BMW for more that 50K due to potential of nasty repair bills. Maintenance is easier for me to calculate and accept. I'd expect the 2014 to come out a little buggy, so who knows how long you will own it. You never know with first year BMWs. P.S. Enjoy the new X5 when you get it! |

I kept my 2007 until 101k and the 2 years paid for itself (barely)
Would I do it over again? Probably because the peace of mind of not having to whip out my Amex was worth it

If you put a ton of miles and you are hard on the brakes, then maybe. I have not seen the math work for any of my cars but then again, I am doing 12k-15k max a year and 8k in down Chicagoland miles. My 2012 X5 has 26k miles on it and the the computer tells me I have 24K miles left on the pads... I know that the computer is only an estimate, but when I had the wheels off the other day, the pads are not even 1/2 way.
When the brakes need changing, I have used INDY shops which do very good work and can do a complete brake/rotor swap for under $1k. I have 20" (275/315) wheels on in the summer and 19"(255 square) wheels and the wife is not kind to the brakes if that helps. I do 7500 Oil changes so I end up paying $121.00(Chicago prices) every other oil change.
