Personally I think BMW are stretching the 'Coupe' description a little far with something that is based on a 'utility' (i.e. SUV) theme, but then Merc's CSL is a 4-seater and there are more 4-seat luxury models coming. The consumer will decide whether this is what we want, but I'm ok with 4-seats which is why I've sold my 5-seat ML63 and ordered one.

Actually E46 coupe had enough back space for 3 ppl. I wish BMW change plans and make 5-seater CLS version or at least offer it as an option.

IIRC, you can only have 2 people in the back seat of a current E92/E93 coupe or cabriolet. There are rear vents that prevent anyone from sitting in the middle. I'm not particularly tall or big, (5'8 and a mere 135 lbs) but the back seat of the E92 is only passable. I wouldn't want to sit there for more than 30 minutes. The back of the sedan is better, but in general, I don't have cases where someone sits in the middle rear seat. This even goes for my X3. If I give friends or relatives a ride, I max out my capacity at 4 people, not 5 because the middle person will have to deal with a high centre tunnel, poor cushioning, and they'll block my rearview visibility.
As for cars like the CLS, I (and other magazines agree) that there is limited rear headroom. Plus, getting in and out of the CLS' rear doors is not easy. |

I will see for myself when I sit in one in a few weeks time, but at just over 1.5" less headroom than the X5 I'm not worried about space in the X6 - it strikes me as being on a par with the 5-series (give or take a haircut).
As for the 5th seat. I can understand BMW's product strategy, but only time will tell if customers agree. Ultimately 'we' will strongly influence BMW's plans for the future if the lack of a 5th seat stops us buying the X6. My view is that BMW should have allowed a baby-seat option (as does Volvo) to at least assist those people with younger families, but I don't believe there is sufficient width for 3 people in the rear whilst still keeping the heavily bolstered bucket seats (which I certainly like). p.s. BMW might (reasonably) argue that even a Maybach only has 2 seats in the rear..

I persanaly hate when somebody seats in the center back seat in my car blocking the view + it is the most dangerous seat in crash an so on, so now I would say sorry for someone 5th saying that my car has only 4 seats! I would choose 4 seat option if it was an option and you will have another good compartment for something, so I am happy about that but dont very like the design of it. It would be better if it was like that
![]() It is Q7 option |
